I made over 150 of these in the month of December and it was A DELIGHT. I’ve been enjoying the small format because it allows me to paint 6-10 at a time, which allows my brain to get into a flow state instead of waiting between layers drying. I started with small things (fruits, flowers, a cheese or two) and ended with some more whimsy (my favorites have been the donuts and olives holding hands). They make me happy to see, and I wish I had a wall of all 150 so I could properly grasp how many the number was, and the space they took up, and the way they may have looked all together.

Unsurprisingly, I was terrible at capturing the process and sharing them here, but I miss feeling connected to the art community through social media. There is so much on here that is horrifying to see and it makes sharing art feel nearly silly in how insignificant it is against the backdrop we are all living in. But I would tell a friend that sharing art is one of those final holdouts of humanity, like sharing a meal, or running errands together, or letting yourself call a friend and ask for what you need from them.

So, I hope you like my tiny silly paintings, and if you bought one I’d love to see it on your wall (because it felt like a fever dream and I barely remember them all 😘).

Ok love you bye

CHLOE

For my 39th birthday I did a series of paintings, each an abstraction of a dear friend that made me feel seen in my 39th year. In some cases it was people I had known for 25 years, and in others it was people I got to know over the year. My hope was to make something that resonated, and made my friends also feel seen.

Shout out to joy, and laughter, and people capturing the beauty of another person.

It was fun figuring out how to represent the identity of parenthood; which I think within my own friends has included a return to whimsy, childlike pleasures of creativity, goofiness, all things that exist within us regardless, but that children give us a bit more permission to practice and inhabit. Thank goodness for the permission to play that comes with those early years of imagination, and the desire to encourage it!

I found that the more I knew someone’s layers, or had seen them travel a few different identities, the harder it was to feel certainty in capturing them. How could I possibly contain all their identities and layers in an abstract and concise way? I’m not sure I did, but making things teaches you the inflection point of intention and letting go, so for all my mixing of colors, testing of shapes, experimenting with mediums, I also allowed for it to evolve as it felt right for me.

I used color, shape, and texture to evoke some of the ways I experienced each person. Small windows into hidden layers, oil pastel for the softness I saw, each person its own little lovely painting in my head.

For some it was obvious what colors and shapes came to mind for me, but each persons color was mixed so many different ways until I found the right tone I was looking for that reminded me of them. This piece was initially going to be a very mossy green color, and something about that felt off, until I decided I would start over and go back to mixing pigments. In the end this peachy orange reflected more of Hollis than I think the green was ever going to, but the process of testing how what “felt” right was fascinating as a test in intuitive painting.

TRAVERS

For my 39th birthday I did a series of paintings, each an abstraction of a dear friend that made me feel seen in my 39th year. In some cases it was people I had known for 25 years, and in others it was people I got to know over the year. My hope was to make something that resonated, and made my friends also feel seen.

I think of so many friends as colors, and just generally associate a color with every person I meet. There were also different components to each piece that I worked to try and evoke the sense of playfulness, or balance, or sometimes the things we may hide or keep secret. It was a very challenging, but fun, exercise in how to express the complexities of the people I’m surrounded by.
