Let's talk about it: Mental Health in Dance. Just like everyone else, dancers struggle with their mental health too. But, instead of recognizing signs of mental illness and seeking treatment, we more often ignore signs, decide to "push through," and crash. Being a "strong dancer" and "leaving it outside the studio", should not come as a detriment to your mental health, and seeking treatment should not be seen as a weakness. As dancers, we take great care of our bodies, and we need to extend that care to our minds. Think about how you can care for your mental health inside and outside the studio. Let's talk about it: Racism in Dance. Dance is not exempt from systemic racism. Look at the racial demographics of your local studio, your favorite dance company, or the board of an arts nonprofit. They're all probably overwhelmingly white. White dancers are more likely to afford formal dance classes and costly intensives, more likely to be hired as dance educators and performers, and more likely to receive adequate funding for their companies and productions. Whiteness and white privilege allow white artists to get ahead, while, holding BIPOC artists back. This unequal system has been allowed to exist for far too long, and it's time to address it. In order to dismantle systemic racism, we need to take the first step and become anti-racist dancers. Here are a few tips on how you can start to become an anti-racist dancer. We hope you join us on this journey to make dance equitable for all.
