Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans โ€” a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Rossโ€™s 1982 music video โ€œMuscles.โ€

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielbergโ€™s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

"Piโ€™tamaka also known as "Brown Weasel Womanโ€ was born into the Piikรกni Piegan Tribe of the Blackfeet Nation. She was the eldest of two sisters and two brothers. As a girl, she began to show less interest in traditional female roles and more interest in hunting and the games her brothers played. Her father, a well-respected warrior of the tribe, indulged her interest and taught her to hunt and fight."She loved learning the ways of a warrior and soon gave up the work of the household in exchange for hunting buffalo with her father. During one of these buffalo hunts, the group of hunters encountered an enemy war party and when they retreated at top speed to escape their enemies, her father had his horse shot out from under him and he was injured. Although it was very dangerous, Brown Weasel Woman turned back, picked up her father and escaped. One of the bravest deeds a warrior could perform was to face the enemy while riding back to rescue someone who was left behind. So when she returned to camp, the people honored her for being courageous.
"Soon after, her mother became very ill and, because she was the oldest child, Brown Weasel Woman took over the chores of the household to help her mother. Although she was an excellent home maker, she did not have any interest in doing any of it. She enjoyed the menโ€™s activities of hunting and war much more. Although many of the men took an interest in her, she did not have any interest in having a boyfriend or becoming married.
"The turning point of Brown Weasel Womanโ€™s life came when her father was killed during a war party and her mother died soon afterwards. Brown Weasel Woman suddenly became responsible for her brothers and sisters. She took on the role as the head of the family which meant that she hunted for and protected her family. Because of this new responsibility, a widowed woman moved in to help with the household chores and to help teach her brothers and sisters.
"Brown Weasel Womanโ€™s first war adventure was against the Crows who had stolen some Blackfeet horses. It took the war party several days to get to Crow country, but when they arrived, the Blackfeet were successful at stealing many of the Crowโ€™s horses. Brown Weasel Woman stole eleven horses by herself. Although the Crows chased them for a while, the Blackfeet got safely back to their camp.
"On the way back to the camp, Brown Weasel Woman was on watch duty from the top of a butte, while the others rested in a hidden location. She saw two enemies approaching, and before she could reach the men to warn them of the danger, the enemies were ready to round up and steal their horses. Brown Weasel Woman ran down the butte with her rifle and grabbed the rope of the herdโ€™s lead horse to keep the rest from running away. The enemies saw that she was a woman and began to close in on her because they did not expect any trouble from her. Brown Weasel Woman shot the enemy who carried a rifle and forced the other one to turn and run. The men were very impressed by her courage of saving the horses and killing an enemy.
"During the summer, when the tribes gathered and the warriors told of their many adventures, the Piikรกni chief told Brown Weasel Woman to share hers. This was a highly unusual thing for a woman to be asked, but after doing so, the chief bestowed upon her the name Pi'tamaka (Running Eagle) as a sign of respect and honor."

NORTHERN CHEYENNE GIRLS, with their finest toys and best dresses, 1907. Julia (Troops) Tuell had been a 21-year-old schoolteacher when she arrived in 1906 at the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Eastern Montana. She learned the language and preserved views of reservation life.

Later, Tuell taught school and took photographs from 1913-29 at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, home of the Sioux (Sicangu Oyate), a branch of the Lakota people. Photography was becoming less expensive, more democratic. Candid shots of everyday life were becoming more frequent, smiles were starting to appear in photographs. In 1996, Tuellโ€™s images were published in โ€œWomen and Warriors of the Plains.โ€ If using a PC, click photo to enlarge/clarify. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

WHAT A CAPTURE! Buffalo were dangerously close to the photographer, and four wagons were in the background. THUNDERING HERD was the printโ€™s title, even though the animals were lollygagging on what seemed to be high-desert terrain. Thundering Herd was the title of a Zane Gray novel that was made into a movie three times. I suspect that the shot was made at the production of one of those films. The photographerโ€™s closeness hinted at a โ€œdomesticatedโ€ herd.

The USC archive listed the photographer as L.A. Huffman of Miles City (Montana), which was simply wrong. USCโ€™s estimated date of 1875 was an absurdity since Huffman arrived at Miles City in 1879. Huffmanโ€™s price lists never referenced the splendid cinematic view. Conclusion: Great shot, unknown photographer, likely taken at a location used in filming Thundering Herd with a date closer to 1925 than 1875. Research and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
