Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans โ€” a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Rossโ€™s 1982 music video โ€œMuscles.โ€

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielbergโ€™s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

GLENDIVE Business District, 1882. Mixterโ€™s Music Hall had boxes of bottles in front. Note the use of the key icon on the Keno sign. Whiskey or beer barrels were down the street. Beyond Jimโ€™s Opera House were several business signs, all about the same size. A tent was at the far left. Miles City photographer L.A. Huffman traveled east to Glendive, Montana, population 500. The NP Railroad had six water stops along the 75-mile route: Tusler, Shirley, Blatchford, Terry, Fallon, and Hoyt.

Luman B. Mixter reportedly died in 1882 at age 37. Perhaps an interesting news story about Mixterโ€™s death convinced Huffman that there would be a market for the photo. An eBay postcard listing with a mediocre scan provided my source file. Text and digital sharpening of image by Gary Coffrin.

โ€œWhen The Land Belonged To God.โ€ In 1880 at age 16, Charles Marion Russell arrived in Montana. Russell worked the open ranges before barbed wire enclosed lands. Charlie saw the last of the large buffalo herds, which were gone after 1883. If using a PC, click image to enlarge. It is worth the effort!

Steam and dust were rising from the herd as they crested a hill. Two wolves were prowling in the foreground. Additional buffalo were crossing the Missouri River in the background. Not a horse, cowboy, or Native was in view. Russell created his masterpiece in oil during 1913. I stare in awe. -Gary Coffrin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved Chief Leon Locklear of the Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina has passed away.
Chief Leon Locklear was a man with a heart for people. Not just Tuscarora people, he loved, cared for and helped โ€œpeopleโ€. White, black, red, yellow it didnโ€™t matter what color you were he treated everyone equally.
He traveled internationally and was recognized globally by indigenous people. He never owed a U.S. passport instead he asserted his sovereignty and entered and existed countries using his Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina passport/tribal card. You ask what is sovereignty?
Sovereignty is Chief Leon. He lived and breathed it everyday.
Chief Leon was a highly respected and influential leader not only here in N.C. but across Indian Country.
As arrangements are made we will keep you posted.

FIRST CROW AGENCY, 1871, eight miles east of Livingston, Montana. W.H. Jacksonโ€™s historically important photo showed Fort Parker before it burned in 1872. Toward the right you can see one of the two bastions (guard towers). The fort, built with hewn cottonwood logs, had a schoolroom, storerooms, stables, and living quarters for the agent, physician, engineer, miller, carpenter, blacksmith, and teacher. A Methodist minister would arrive in 1873 after adobe structures replaced the log buildings in the photo.

The photo showed the first Reservation headquarters. In 1875, the Agency was moved 70 miles east to Absarokee. In 1884, the headquarters was then moved 110 miles east to what is now the town of Crow Agency.

I spent hours in Photoshop to present what I hope is the clearest version of the photo on the web. -Gary Coffrin

Few people realize that the ancestors of Native Americans arrived in North America around 15,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, they built a rich world of diverse communities, complex societies, and distinct culturesโ€”each deeply rooted in the land.

Before Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492, the Indigenous population is estimated to have reached over 70 million. What is now the United States was home to roughly 562 tribes, each with its own language, traditions, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.

Some of the largest and most well-known tribes include the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Iroquois, Apache, Comanche, Pawnee, Choctaw, Mohawk, Cree, and Ojibwaโ€”each once flourishing and sovereign across vast regions of the continent.

The map below is a rare artifact that captures North America before European contactโ€”a time many refer to as the โ€œGlory Daysโ€ of Indigenous nations. While Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec fell early to Spanish conquest, many interior North American tribes remained autonomous, some resisting colonial forces well into the 19th and even 20th centuries.

At their peak, Native peoples across the Americas spoke close to 4,000 languages, reflecting a cultural diversity on par with the greatest civilizations in human history.

But the European conquest that began in 1492 brought catastrophe: pandemics, warfare, forced displacement, and slavery caused a dramatic collapse in Indigenous populations. When the United States was founded, Native tribes were officially regarded as โ€œsemi-sovereign nations,โ€ yet they were increasingly pushed off their lands, silenced, and stripped of their autonomy.

This map is more than a geographic documentโ€”it is a memory of a thriving world erased from most textbooks. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness, resilience, and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the history of this landโ€”before that history was rewritten by those who came to conquer it.
