Step Four: Engage with Genuine Efforts. This is not a Bandaid situation. We cannot sign a pledge, donate $25 and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. Adding a signature, darkening an IG feed, and sharing images of artists of color and their work may make us feel better in the moment, but what happens when this movement is no longer trending? We cannot let those easy, public solutions distract us from the real work, which in many cases has been happening all along with little to no fanfare. The Give to Glass campaign is one way we can translate our outrage into real impact, but there are other great projects happening all over the world that deserve recognition and support. Make sure you use your voice and spend your clicks, your time and your money on efforts that will make a meaningful and lasting impact.

Step Three: Support the Orgs Doing the Work on the Ground- Building a more inclusive Glass community means taking glass to the people who need and deserve it, and extending opportunities beyond expensive Universities and summer workshops. The organizations working in under-resourced communities and doing the year-round work of are suffering due to COVID. They are just as important and need the same level of support afforded the few larger more well known glass orgs. Glass Impact was formed to unite organizations mobilizing glass artists to bring positive change to communities. Give to Glass was launched to ensure that these organizations survive. Donate, and watch the glass community diversify, grow, and prosper. @ Public Glass

Step Two: Educate Yourself. There is a lot of well-intentioned information circling the social media-verse right now, some of it powerful and some of it problematic. It’s important not only to listen and to amplify, but to spend time with the voices speaking the uncomfortable truths about where we all have been complicit. It’s even more important to check our gut reactions that tell us to point out what we were already doing, how we have succeeded as allies, why WE are not the problem, so that we can be truly reflective and absorb the enormity of the work there is to do. We’ve compiled a few links to statements and exhibitions from BIPOC artists about their lived experiences in the glass and greater arts world. Hear them, sit with their messages, and prepare yourself to act with understanding and not just intentions.

Public Glass here, continuing our takeover centered around ways to support access, diversity and equity in glass! Step One: Acknowledge the Facts.

1. Glass studios around the country suffer from a glaring lack of diversity.

2. There is only one Black Woman teaching in a university glass program in the US.

3. There are no Black owned glass equipment, supply, or resource companies

4. There are 2 tenured or tenure track African Americans teaching in University glass programs in the US.

5. There are 2 African American Executive Directors of Glass Organizations in the United States

6. Inclusivity in the glass industry is predominantly framed through the successes of white women.

7. If classism, sexism, racism and homophobia were not a problem in our studios there would be more Women, People of Color, and Q***r artists working in glass

8. Look at the instagram feeds of our leading Glass Community orgs. Look at the last month… then look at the last year. What stands out to you? What Changed??

9. The leading Glass Community orgs and institutions had no images of Black or Brown people in their instagram feeds until 3 weeks ago.

Shows of solidarity are great, but they do not erase history or fix systemic issues. @ Public Glass

Hey Glassy Bitch followers, this is an instagram takeover from in San Francisco! We’re honored to have a platform to talk about the ideas that matter most to us. We’ll be posting all day about issues of access, diversity and equity in the glass arts, and sharing real actionable steps you can take RIGHT NOW to effect change. But first… Who the heck is Public Glass?!

Public Glass is San Francisco’s only public glass studio. We’re a community-focused 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting accessibility in the glass arts. We teach classes, have both youth and senior programs, bring in local and world renowned artists for The Original Hot Glass Cold Beer, open our studios for local marketplaces that support small businesses in our community, and have recently launched a product line that employs Bay Area artists at fair wages to make beautiful utilitarian glassware designed by . Every day we strive to be a more inclusive and equitable studio that makes a difference in the lives of those around us, and we pride ourselves on partnering with organizations that do the same.
