Missed the Opening Reception? This weekend is your last opportunity to experience MAHAL, an exhibition by the 2026 Kreative Growth artists, Tanza J. Solis and Gelli Pascual.

Join Gelli Pascual for a Saturday artist-led tour through the gallery, with space for reflection, conversation, and connection. Through her series Mana ng Mahal: The Legacy of Mahal, Gelli invites visitors to reflect on the unseen labor of caregiving across generations, and the ways love is inherited through sacrifice, protection, generations, and everyday acts of care.

Saturday’s artist tour will be hosted by from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Sunday’s artist tour will be hosted by from 2-6 pm.

On the first day of Pride Month, we return to an exhibition that opened last Thursday in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood — one that asks a question at the heart of both Filipino culture and q***r experience: what does it mean to love, and what does that love cost us?

On a warm Thursday evening, visitors stepped into 447 Minna Street and were greeted not with a typical gallery opening but with an invitation: As you enter, take a moment to soften and remember the people, gestures, and sacrifices that have taught you what love means.

This was MAHAL — the 2026 edition of Balay Kreative’s annual Kreative Growth exhibition, presented by Balay Kreative and hosted at CAST SF’s 447 Minna Arts Hub located in the historic Dempster Building. The show features two Filipinx artists: photographer, filmmaker, and poet Gelli Pascual, and multidisciplinary painter, sculptor and material necromancer, Tanza J. Solis. Together, their work forms a meditation on love as inheritance, practice, and responsibility.

Murals have always been the people’s archive. Long before
institutions decided what was worth preserving, communities
painted their truths on walls — who they were, what they
loved, what they refused to forget. San Francisco’s walls
have always been a site of resistance and remembrance.
This year, we want our community to share their artwork
of Mahal.

Balay Kreative is accepting applications for the
2026 MAHAL Mural Project — an open call for Bay Area
artists to create two permanent murals in Jessie West
Alley, San Francisco.

This is a paid opportunity:
→ $18,500 awarded per selected artist or team (2 selected)
→ $1,000 for each shortlisted finalist’s design proposal

The theme is Mahal — a Tagalog word carrying the dual
meaning of “beloved” and “valuable.” Artists are invited
to explore it as emotional practice, community vision,
or personal journey.

Open to SF Bay Area solo artists and teams working in
public art or mural-making, of any background.

Application deadline: June 5, 2026 at 5 PM
No mural rendering required at time of application.
