Gil Birmingham, of Comanche ancestry, was born in San Antonio, Texas. Growing up in a military family, he moved frequently and developed a love for music, mastering the guitar in his youth.

Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans — a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Ross’s 1982 music video “Muscles.”

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielberg’s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

COWBOY TUNIS, 1886-96. Miles City (Montana) photographer L.A. Huffman photographed cowhand Henry Tunis, dressed to impress on the unfenced range. The apparently left-handed cowboy had top-line wool chaps, spurs, revolver, sugar loaf hat, and headstall decorated with silver conchos. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify, it’s worth a second look.

The C Dot horse brand was associated with Col. Comstock’s Horse Ranch in the Pumpkin Creek area south of Miles City. The proper orientation of the C Dot brand confirms that the negative was not reversed, not flipped horizontally. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Beyond the stage, Taboo’s 2016 anthem “Stand Up / Stand N Rock” earned a Native American Music Award for its solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. As an ambassador for health, education, and indigenous rights, he mentors youth and champions cultural preservation—continuing to inspire a new generation of artists.

1910 MYSTERY: How did the photographer get so high above Miles City’s Main Street? The shot for this colorized postcard originated from a point about as high as the Wibuax Building (three-story structure at the right), perhaps 60+ feet. The photo was by Thiri’s Aerial View Service of Polson. Before airplanes were flying, Thiri got his shots from building tops, window ledges, grain elevators, poles, tree limbs, mountains. But, none of these explain this shot. Thiri never used a balloon.

Main Street was a dirt road until 1918. Streetlights had been installed in 1909. The Wibaux Building and the Olive Hotel were the best buildings in town. Miles City, population 5,000, was growing rapidly after the arrival of the Milwaukee Railroad (1907) and passage of the Enlarged Homestead Act (1909). [My later post of Feb. 12, 2018, showed an even higher view and explained how Thiri obtained his captures.] -Gary Coffrin.
