A Conversation With The Rare Woman in the Pit — Forty Years of the Grateful Dead & Beyond 📸

For one evening only, Saint Joseph’s Arts Society presents an evening with Susana Millman: a conversation with the San Francisco performance photographer alongside a pop-up exhibition of her work, spanning four decades on the other side of the lens from some of the most photographed performers in the world.

Move over, novels! The evening belongs to the xeroxed, the stapled, and the gloriously homemade.

On September 28th at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society, Queens of Zines gathers three Bay Area makers who built careers out of cut paper and copy machines—featuring artists, authors, and DIY extraordinaires Janelle Blarg and Ariel Gore in conversation, moderated by graphic novelist Thien Pham.

Join us Tuesday, Oct 6th for Susana Millman: Capturing the Moment, a conversation with the rare woman in the pit — forty years of Grateful Dead performance photography. 📸

Millman access deepened through friendships with the Dead’s inner circle, and what she came away with is a body of work defined less by spectacle than by warmth: Jerry Garcia mid-grin, Mickey Hart cracking up with a Gyuto monk, Bob Weir caught in conversation, Miles Davis with his cheeks full of air.
