An incredible closing night for “Hidden Truths”—the cast poured their heart and soul into this program of Absurdist theater classics, and the audience ate it up! Whether the best moments were planned or unplanned, the farcical nuttiness onstage was peak JCHS Theater. Special shoutout to Marco S. ‘29 who stepped in at the last moment on Wednesday and again on Thursday when a cast member fell ill—it’s remarkable when you have one new role to learn, but when you take on four new parts? That’s a spectacular high wire act! The entire company embraced “the show must go on” mentality and it was a joy to watch! Tons more photos from this show on our Flickr.

What happens when language breaks down, logic unravels, and the world stops making sense? Welcome to Theater of the Absurd — a mid-20th century dramatic movement that explores the confusion, contradictions, and dark humor of the human condition.

Instead of neat plots and tidy endings, absurdist plays lean into circular dialogue, illogical situations, and big existential questions. In a time when headlines feel surreal and certainty can be hard to find, these works feel more relevant than ever — reminding us that laughter and discomfort often live side by side.

JCHS proudly presents Hidden Truths, featuring Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer, plus scenes from The Philadelphia by David Ives, The Sandbox by Edward Albee, Rhinoceros by Eugène Ionesco, and Endgame by Samuel Beckett. These bold, brilliant pieces challenge what we expect from theater — and from ourselves.

Performances are March 1 and March 4–5 at JCHS. Tickets are now on sale.
PS: The images above feature some of the incredible cast members bringing the absurd to life — with precision, courage, and just the right amount of chaos.

A moment of appreciation for the details: did you know that Ms Sturgill’s sets include a skyline of Stratford-upon-Avon, the English market town where William Shakespeare was born? In the silhouettes you can pick out the square tower of King Edward VI School which the Bard attended as a child, the spire of Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried, and the more modern lines of the historic Royal Shakespeare Theatre built in 1932 and renovated and reopened officially in 2011.

Yasher Koach to the company of Something Rotten! on another great show! And ALL the Kavod goes to Maiz M., who jumped into the role of Bea with only minutes notice when a cast member became ill. With Ms. Jamie filling in the songs and Maiz lighting up the stage, the entire cast pulled off an incredible “make it work” moment! Congratulations to everyone who poured their heart into the show to raise Maiz up and give the audience a fabulous night. And to our beloved Bea, we can’t wait to see you back onstage tomorrow! This is why we love live theater.🎭
