Thinking about how the first ideas of my cultural identity were formed, I'm always tied back to the calendar images of Jesús Helguera. These paintings specifically made to embody Mexican culture and pride, have (similarly to the craft of sign painting) become eternalized through the tradition of their painting and replication. I grew up living with my grandparents and in their home my grandmother had painted and hung her own replicas of these paintings as large as 10ft long around the household. Since the images for me are intrinsically tied to the feeling of being home, I've made my own replica on a chair.

Work in progress from Nisha, painting that “Bombay candy convex”—she couldn’t have described it better 🍭🌈🍬✨ it’s a definite homage to the brightly multicolored multidimensional letters found in her roots in India. Emphasizing the bay and painting on a found samtrans sign, she gives love to where she’s originally from too—Berkeley, California.

Melvin of working on his piece for the show, who is originally from Portland with roots in Toisan, Guandong Province. Popular myth has it that the first park in China open to the public (designed by a Scottish gardener & aimed towards foreigners), was closed off to Chinese people between 1890 & 1928–with a sign that read this. Around the same time, the Chinese were being excluded in the US as well. Here he is painting how he feels this sign would’ve looked like at the time, more to come soon!

Lauren giving us a sneak peek of her gold blackletter. We got to speak about her background and inspirations:

In painting, I'm interested in the nostalgic relationship I have to my family’s craft of sign making and strive to relate to this prior generation of blue-collar workers, folk artists, and replica painters through the repetition of their actions. I’m drawn to the decorative arts, and the iconic Chicano imagery tied to my upbringing.

Charmaine of laying down the ground work to paint, loving the languages piling in and that she’s throwing in pictorials too! Born in Singapore, where many people share the same space, she uses the title of the show in a more positive context of being accepting of each other—in Mandarin, Jawi, and Tamil.
