Hey everybody! A funny thing has happened recently. For whatever reason, Production companies have been asking for demo reels again. I haven't needed a demo reel in at least 15 years, but it seems to be a thing again, so I've made a new one.

We just wrapped up a project that had us filming on the historic old stages of the Sony lot, formally MGM Studios. It feels a bit romantic and also a bit of a privilege to have our work captured on the same stages as these wonderful classics. I’ll share more when we can.

We were recently asked to lend our services to the new Paramount+ “Survivor/Yellowjackets” crossover campaign. For this project, we designed and created eight unique custom torches and a torch snuffer. The torches and snuffer were a combination of custom metal work, a variety of found objects, 3-D printed & natural skulls and bones, leather, and a mix of fake and real fur. Production’s in-house fx team then plumbed the torches with small propane burners to complete the look

We took a break from Instagram for a little while (ok, it’s been a year and a half since our last post😬), but we’re back! Part of our return has to do with the recent visit that we had from a group of aspiring young film makers from the Advanced Video Production program at Tahoma High School in Washington State. Teachers Mark Jones & Richard Haag and the students from Tahoma High made the trip to Los Angeles to get first hand exposure to Hollywood production. They were a great group of kids with insightful questions and boundless curiosity, and I think that it’s helpful to be reminded occasionally that, as frustrating and challenging as our industry can sometimes be, it is also the stuff of dreams & a source of hope and inspiration for so many up and coming young artists.

Hey Everybody, every part of this project was designed around the ideas that, at some point, we’d be blowing this thing up. We invited FX legend Ritchie Helmer to come out of retirement for the job, and, working hand in hand with Quantum Leap’s in-house practical FX team, we designed the sequence. We wanted the dish to explode in a very specific way, so we had to design every aspect of the miniature in a way that would allow us to achieve the look that our client was after.

The explosion begins with the missile penetrating the roof of the bunker. We then wanted the entrance doors to blow out and the initial explosion to project up into the back of the dish, backlighting the dish and beginning the destructive process. After that, a combination of detcord and focused mortars shredded the dish, and we backlit the whole thing with a separate butane explosion. The entire event lasted only milliseconds in real time, but with a half dozen high speed cameras capturing it from multiple angles (including one mounted directly to the roof of the miniature), we were able to get some truly spectacular footage.

Hey Everybody, for the SAM site, we designed the miniatures to not only look great but also to blow apart in a convincing manner. The dish was fabricated from over 400 individual pieces while the bunker was a combination of structural steel, Baltic plywood, and detailed castings that mimicked the look of the full sized sets. We used practical lighting to help sell the scale of the miniature, with miniature spotlights lighting the dish and industrial looking miniature exterior lights spilling down the walls.

Hey everybody, it’s been a busy year and we haven’t been posting much, but here’s something that we can finally talk about. Working with costume designer and with our frequent collaborating partner , we worked together to create an intricate, completely custom armored costume for Ronda Rousey, for use in promoting the video game RAID: Shadow Legends. With just 2 weeks (yes, TWO!!!) to fabricate the completely custom costume, the teams at CCI and Mavencraft Studios absolutely outdid themselves with the final product that we delivered!

This will NEVER get old for me! There’s nothing quite like driving around LA and seeing your company’s work plastered across these massive billboards. I’m very proud of the work that the whole team brought to the telling of this tale and I hope that everyone enjoys this latest adaptation! Thanks to Robert Zemeckis for once again inviting us to the table, and thanks to Disney for entrusting us with bringing Pinocchio into the real world!

Hey everybody, here’s the first official image from Disney’s live action version of the animated classic Pinocchio, directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckis and staring Tom Hanks as Geppetto. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to work with Robert Zemeckis and his team once again, and it was humbling to be entrusted by Disney with the task of creating the real world version of one of their most iconic characters. We’ll share more of the process that went into our creation of not only Pinocchio but other characters featured in the retelling of this classic story when we can! #
