San Diego Women's Chorus

San Diego Women's Chorus San Diego Women’s Chorus is a lesbian-identified, feminist community of musicians that welcomes LGBTQ+ and straight ally members.

SDWC strives to be a safe feminist space that encourages creativity, celebrates diversity, and inspires social action. The San Diego Women's Chorus is a non-audition, lesbian-identified community chorus that supports and affirms the music of women, and lesbian and gay composers and arrangers. Our members are feminist-spirited people with a strong sense of social conscience who work to entertain an

d educate the LGBT community and the San Diego community at large. The music of SDWC speaks to issues as diverse as human rights, love, world peace, religious freedom, environmental harmony, inclusion and cultural diversity. The San Diego Women's Chorus was established in 1987 by Cynthia Lawrence-Wallace, a well-known community activist. That first group was made up of 14 members who rehearsed in Cynthia's living room. Several of those founding members are still active singing members today. Interested in joining the San Diego Women’s Chorus? We welcome women, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and transgender individuals who sing in the Soprano/Alto (treble) range.

It was lovely to sing the national anthem ON THE PITCH for the San Diego Wave FC! Plus they went on to beat Louisville coming back from behind. I think San Diego Women's Chorus is a good luck charm!

Last season, we were fortunate to perform this lovely arrangement that uses the words of late poet, Wendell Berry. Please enjoy our rendition
of Joan Szymko’s setting of The Peace of Wild Things.

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Dolly Parton had a unique way of bringing people together through her music. An LGBTQ+ ally, she was know for her big heart and quick wit as much as for her musical performances.

Here is our performance of Dolly’s “World On Fire”, arranged by Ash.
