On December 1, 1969, the United States held the first Vietnam draft lottery of the war. Every eligible man born between January 1, 1944 and December 31, 1950 was suddenly assigned a number that could determine whether he would be sent to fight in Vietnam.

That night, millions of Americans gathered around televisions and radios to watch the drawing live.

Inside a glass container were 366 capsules... one for every day of the year. Each capsule held a birth date. As the capsules were drawn, they were paired with numbers determining the order young men would be called into military service. A low number meant a very high chance of being drafted. A high number meant a better chance of staying home.

College dorms, fraternity houses, and living rooms across the country fell silent as birthdays were called.

Many young men learned that night that their futures had changed in a matter of seconds.

According to historical records, the highest number actually drafted from the 1969 lottery was 195. Anyone with a number below that line could expect to be called.

The photo attached shows the official results of that lottery... the list that millions of young Americans scanned anxiously, searching for their birthday and trying to understand what it meant for their future.

This tense and historic moment is brought to life in the powerful stage production First Day in December.

Set in a fraternity house at the University of Pennsylvania on the night of the first draft lottery, the play follows a group of college friends celebrating a birthday when the live broadcast begins. Over the course of 90 agonizing minutes, 366 birth dates are pulled, determining which young men will be sent to war—and which will be spared.

As the numbers come out, celebration turns into dread, friendships are tested, and the reality of the draft becomes impossible to ignore.

First Day in December captures the pressure, fear, and uncertainty of a night when an entire generation realized their lives could be decided by the luck of the draw.

Imagine turning on the TV on a regular Monday night—December 1, 1969—only to realize that your future is no longer your own. In a matter of hours, the U.S. government will flippantly assign you a low draft number, assuring you’ll be called to fight a war in a country you can’t even locate on a map.

First Day in December is more than a historical drama; it is a visceral exploration of the moment a generation’s innocence was lost to the luck of the draw. It is a haunting tribute to “a day that changed our lives forever.”

Set in a fraternity house at the University of Pennsylvania, First Day in December captures the high-stakes pressure cooker of the first-ever Vietnam draft lottery. What begins as a 21st birthday celebration for fraternity president Mike Harris, quickly descends into a night of desperation as the live radio broadcast begins. 366 capsules, each one containing a different birth date, are drawn over an excruciating 90 minutes to determine the order America’s young men will be called to fight in Vietnam. As the young men listen for their own birthdays, they also begin to turn on each other.

On an ordinary Monday night in 1969, young men gathered around a radio as draft numbers were pulled from a glass bin — the first draft lottery since WWII. In one corner: cheers, beers, relief. In the other: silence, sobbing, the crushing realization that the year ahead might end in Vietnam.

“Who knew the day we were born would become a death sentence?”

First Day in December, directed by award-winning Michael Mizerany, is a gripping new play that puts the spotlight not just on the Vietnam War — but on the draft lottery that decided who went.

It’s a story of patriotism and protest. Of luck and loss. Of the brothers who came home… and the ones who didn’t.

If you’ve ever wondered what it felt like to have your future decided by chance, this is the show you need to see.
