Do you like rolling solo, or with a team? Watching this clip has me thinking about the dynamic between running solo missions & leveraging efffective teamwork. There's an ancient Native American saying that says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." While modern American culture leans towards excessive individualism & people thus tend to use this saying to suggest that going together is superior, what it really says is that there are different advantages to each. Also, everyone has their own style, and it's vital to know, for our own happiness, what style we lean towards & naturally function better with. While there are certainly many moments where teaming up is the most effective path (as challenging as it may feel at times to compromise our full freedom in the act of cooperation), we encourage you to think of both these concepts as being appropriate to different circumstances & stay present to how best you can serve the interests of all concerned in any given moment. Fire spinning vs. Fire dancing... what's the difference? I am well aware that I'm not the best fire dancer in the world. I'm fortunate to be friends with quite a few people who are in that class & it's jaw dropping to watch them spin literally anything. That said, I've been told several times after getting off stage, "That was awesome! You were the best one!" I used to make sure to disabuse them of their illusions by contradicting them, but there are a few reasons I simply smile now & say, "Thanks!" One is that it always just confused them, and I noticed that wasn't helping. Two is that I realized that I could not tell them who was the best TO THEM.. which is why, no doubt, it confused them when I denied what was true for them. The third reason became clear when I watched people who were far better than me in object manipulation, or spinning, and then watched videos of myself (which took me a long time to feel really comfortable with). Something about moving to the same music that is touching the audience creates a sense of connection that I now understand is greatly appreciated by audiences, and I'm grateful that my passion for movement kicks my performance up a notch in terms of audience experience... while I love it thoroughly! Looking for a hack to more happiness? We love how tight spaces force adaptation! Performing at is awesome, and they have moved our performance space so there's a lot more room since the time of this show, yet adapting our duet to this spot had it's hidden gift. It's often challenge & structure that breeds innovation & expands capacity. In this case, the question became, "Can you take all your horizontal leaping energy & leap vertically?" or, "Can you slow down enough to create the same dynamic in a smaller space?" Do you have a balance of celebration & goal setting? Seeing how we revel in the electric energy in this clip reminds me of how vital it is to celebrate... Bathing in power is amazing! It is a common trap for us to ever seek the next goal & the next without truly appreciating where we are & what we've already accomplished. While it's a natural aspect of our neurology to adjust to our conditions & primarily be stimulated through contrast, we can intentionally recall what we've learned & focus on appreciating how far we've come. Doing this, we bring more joy into our lives & recharge our batteries to return to the fray of learning & growth that the challenges of this mortal life affords us.
