As we suspend operations as of June 19 2022, we want to thank all of the Curious Souls who - over 46 Seasons, 333 productions and countless special events - have been our cherished partners. We are so grateful to all of the artists, support staff, technicians, speakers, audiences, donors, advisors, volunteers, and friends who have helped make San Diego REP unique and special. Your passion, care, commitment, and curiosity has inspired us every day. We are proud to have made provocative theatre with and for you - the people who live in the place we call home.

A couple of years ago, the Rep artistic team came up with the concept of a live salon about Black artists' experiences in the theatre industry. We envisaged a vibrant celebration and discussion centered around and highlighting Black performing arts creatives, artists, and workers. We Are Listening was born, and so much has been accomplished by our hosts and the artists who have taken part. Now, after more than 40+ episodes featuring more than 60 guests, we will host the final of We Are Listening tonight, Mon Jun 13.

This episode has a lineup of some of San Diego’s most accomplished artists: Freedome Bradley Ballentine, Monique Gaffney, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, Rich Soublet and Yolanda Franklin. This episode will feature the work of Yolanda Franklin, and be a huge thank you and goodbye to our audience.

We celebrate and thank our extraordinary hosts - the Rep’s own Ahmed Kenyatta Dents, Director of Venue Experience and Artistic Associate and La Jolla Playhouse Director of Arts Engagement and In-House Casting, Jacole Kitchen.

Tune in live on ’s Facebook and YouTube on Monday June 13, 6pm PT.

We Are Listening has been a beautiful partnership between the Rep, La Jolla Playhouse and The Old Globe.

Thank you to everyone that has contributed to We Are Listening.

San Diego Rep has produced intimate, provocative, inclusive theatre for 46 years, and been a key fixture of the San Diego arts community and the national theatre landscape. Now, solutions are being sought to secure the future of the company.

Due to financial issues, San Diego Rep has made the difficult decision to cancel the remaining scheduled productions in 2022 and is suspending operations as of June 19. This includes the cancellation of upcoming productions Twelfth Night, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Grand Master Funk and some Jewish Arts Festival events.

We are deeply sorry that we will not be welcoming you into our theatres in coming months. We are suspending operations so we can hopefully move through this challenging time toward a new future for the company. Out of respect for our wonderful staff, artists, our loyal donors, subscribers, ticket holders, volunteers and the broader community that have shown enormous support for the REP, we intend to rise to this challenge.

Sam Woodhouse, San Diego REP Artistic Director, said: “The suspension of operations by San Diego REP is a sad day in the history of the company. But this moment in time also calls for a 360-degree, arms-wide-open thank you and bravo to the hundreds of theatre professionals who made 333 productions in the 46-year history of the REP. These productions' legacy of creative achievement is profound and lasting. Standing side-by-side these passionate artists and craftspeople are the enlightened San Diego REP audiences. I am equally grateful to these insatiably curious San Diegans who have inspired all of us at the REP to reach for a higher ground."

Dr. Larry Cousins, San Diego REP Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: “San Diego REP and its singular voice is vital to our cultural community in San Diego, the state of California and the fabric of the national theatre industry. When Sam Woodhouse co-founded the REP in 1976, he wanted to create theatre that spoke courageously and adventurously. For over four decades, the REP has succeeded in presenting innovative, stimulating, boundary-pushing work, and an abundance of community engagement initiatives. The REP has become a celebrated regional company that makes unforgettable and unique art audiences won’t see anywhere else. Time and time again our audiences tell us that what sets the REP apart is not just its memorable theatre works – it’s the sense of community that does not exist elsewhere."

Our goal is to bring the REP back stronger, to continue making provocative, progressive theatre, and we’re working toward this future.
