Announcing Our New Faculty Addition for the Upcoming Ballet Season 🩰

As we prepare for an incredible 11th Ballet Year at the Ballet Institute of San Diego, we are proud to welcome Mr. Zachary Leighton to our teaching team.

Mr. Leighton joins us with an extensive professional background. A product of the Houston Ballet Academy and the University of Oklahoma’s Oklahoma Festival Ballet, he has spent years performing with prestigious companies, including Dayton Ballet and City Ballet of Los Angeles. His recent role as Assistant Artistic Director of the Ketchikan Theatre Ballet School highlights his expertise in choreography, production, and education.

At BISD, we believe that quality dance education is built on inspiration and engagement. Zachary’s dedication to nurturing the potential of every student aligns perfectly with our mission.

Students Maya and Athena presenting History of the French Ballet

At the Ballet Institute of San Diego, we encourage our students to explore that history by preparing and presenting short talks about great dancers, choreographers, and milestones in ballet. Researching, speaking, and sharing their discoveries helps them develop curiosity, confidence, communication skills, and a deeper appreciation for the art they practice every day.

When students understand where ballet comes from, they begin to see themselves as part of its continuing story.

We believe that great dancers don’t just train their bodies—they train their minds as well.

A former First Soloist with the National Opera of Ukraine, Kseniia brings extensive international performance experience and a deep understanding of ballet technique, artistry, and pedagogy to every class. Some dancers begin their journey in unexpected places.

Katherine Healy first became known as a young ice-skating prodigy. Her early years on the ice gave her strength, discipline, musicality, and performance confidence — qualities that later helped her turn successfully toward ballet.

Her ballet path quickly became extraordinary. She won a silver medal at the USA International Ballet Competition and later received the gold medal at the prestigious Varna International Ballet Competition, becoming one of the youngest dancers to achieve such recognition.

From the ice rink to the ballet stage, Katherine Healy’s story reminds us that talent can grow in many directions — but discipline, courage, and artistry are what turn it into something unforgettable.
