Last week, I shared with you the back story about my Improvisation Piece, but I didn’t share with you just how much this piece has evolved over the last 5 years...

✨ 1. The first photo captures my most recent version - over 6 feet wide in only beiges.
✨ 2. (2016) The original piece I talk about in my IGTV hanging in it’s forever home.
✨ 3. (2017) My blush piece that took the same process but incorporated blush colors and experimented with weaving brass into the piece.
✨ 4. (2019) The improvisation piece done in browns and beiges to hang in the salon of my dear friend and stylist . This piece has become nearly as popular as the original!
✨ 5. (2020) Upside-down Improvisation - extra large! This piece joined the family a year ago when a client (whose name rhymes with zoogle) wanted it to make people feel like they were in the clouds!

About a dozen Barbies live in a Malibu condo just to the left of this photo. Yesterday they ALL boarded a private pink airplane to a Hawaiian resort where they all crammed into a pink camper van. No masks. No social distancing. Those darn Barbies. 😂

I’ve admired Avery for quite a long time and have been particularly drawn to the diversity of her artistic interests. I’ve included some of the work that has struck me the most in my stories. My entire schedule has changed during this shelter-in-place and mostly for the better. My family’s previous morning chaos has been replaced by meditation and solitude. Somewhere in the course of my day, I take a refreshing yoga class on zoom (with my girls running in and out). I drink WAY more water since I can count on a bathroom waiting for me when I need it. I eat WAY more veggies because during a moment of panic, we signed up for a local farm delivery and now I’m not sure how we did life without it.⠀
⠀
However, I have less alone time to work on my tapestries, so I am a weekend warrior. This pair took longer than usual but reminded me of the discipline and faith needed in the creative process to remember that when you finish, that distinct feeling of satisfaction will be worth it. ⠀

What do you do when the family-owned yarn supplier that supplies your very specific dyeable yarn suspends shipping to the U.S. during a pandemic? 😱 You improvise. ⠀

I’m talking improvisation in my stories today and for me, that’s what being an artist is really about. ⠀
⠀
After I finish my current orders, I will have enough yarn left to make two pieces or to make two dozen kits for all of you. Which way should I go? Let me know in the comments. ⠀

After the yarn is ALL gone, I’m going to work with what yarn I can find, experiment, and basically have some fun. I love to improvise, so now is as good a time as any. ⠀

This past Monday would have been my Mom’s 75th Birthday. My whole family celebrated her beautiful spirit over a Zoom happy hour. It was both strange and wonderful. ⠀
⠀
This is her chair in her home in AZ. She created a space that allowed so much beautiful light to come indoors and play. When I was younger, our cat used to sleep stretched out in that sunlight. I’ve noticed that light is one of the ways my mom communicates her presence since passing. ⠀
⠀
I’m extraordinarily grateful during a time like this to have her on the other side to guide me. She’s asked me to trust her - “trust your mother” (finger wagging) - and I do. She asks me to find the joy amidst all of this - and I do. This closeness I have with her even when we seem far apart Is exceptional. ⠀

I’m doing okay. I’ve had a head cold since last weekend which has been strange considering the world around us. I’ve stayed home all week. I also stayed home the week before when my youngest had pink eye. And schools closed today for three more weeks. *deep breath* Okay, We can do this. ⠀
⠀
Honestly, I am grateful to the many groups and organizations who have cancelled or postponed events. This is people doing what is right for other people. I am concerned for those who need the work or have made the art. I’m also sad for the joy that will be temporarily missed, but I’m aware that prevention is our BEST and ONLY strategy right now. ⠀
⠀
It’s my tendency to step away from this space when I don’t quite know what to say. But I’m feeling that I may need this space more than ever right now. For connection. ⠀

I love a creative challenge! This commissioned piece was meant to be “dipped in gold” but my go-to gold dipping technique (which involves watered down gold paint as dye) didn’t show up at all in this black yarn.

So I painted each and every strand individually with a mix of four gold paints! It took time but what a beautiful meditative practice.

And it felt so rebellious. Roving yarn and acrylic paint are two materials that simply do NOT belong together. And yet, together they create the most organic look. (Swipe left for a close up)
