We are deeply saddened by the passing of David Hockney, one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. He was 88.

Born in Bradford, England, Hockneyโ€™s long and extraordinary career took inspiration from the sun-drenched swimming pools in California, the Yorkshire countryside, and ultimately to the gardens of Normandy, where he spent his final years painting with the same joyful curiosity that defined his entire lifeโ€™s work.

โ€œWhat an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldnโ€™t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.โ€

His paintings, prints, drawings, photography and iPad works brought color, warmth and a radical sense of joy to the art world, reminding us again and again that looking closely at the world around us is one of the most profound things a human being can do.
