Art has never existed in isolation.

Throughout history, painters have inspired composers, music has shaped dance, theater has given voice to literature, and architecture has provided the stage upon which culture unfolds. 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 is The San Diego Museum of Art’s performing arts initiative, created to connect these artistic traditions and expand the ways audiences experience art.

Over the summer, Opera Neo kicked off our 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 season with a dazzling performance in the Museum’s iconic rotunda, and the rest of the season will be no less impressive with collaborative performances by Camarada Chamber Music, San Diego Shakespeare Society, @‌classics4kids, San Diego Ballet, and more!

No camera. No studio. Just light, water, and time.

We are thrilled to announce 𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘯 𝘙𝘪𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘩𝘰𝘧𝘧: 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘴, opening on March 6, 2027, at The Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art.

Over the last 15 years, Meghann Riepenhoff has emerged as a leading contemporary photographer innovatively using cyanotypes to visualize the environment and humanity’s impact upon it.

Rather than practicing traditional landscape photography, Riepenhoff collaborates with the environment without a camera. She creates unique cyanotypes by immersing light-sensitive paper in oceans, rivers, and lakes. The elements creating “fingerprints of time and place,” which conjure the scale and all-over compositions of abstract painting and document the human impact on our environment.

The exhibition includes a work commissioned by The San Diego Museum of Art and created by Rieppenhoff and her team in Mission Beach to bring San Diego into this important narrative. This new work will debut in the exhibition and become part of the SDMA permanent collection.

⚽ Fútbol is life. And for Betsabeé Romero, it’s also art.

𝘛𝘦𝘫𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘰 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘴 (Weaving Nets), on view now at MOPA at SDMA, traces the connections between contemporary soccer culture and the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame. Exploring fútbol as a powerful expression of migration, community, and cultural exchange.

Through woven nets, painted tires, and mirrored soccer balls, Romero reminds us that sport is more than a game, it is a shared language that travels with people, carrying traditions, histories, and identities wherever they go.

Don’t miss your opportunity to see some of the most iconic posters by Toulouse-Lautrec before the curtain closes on September 20.

Dr. Michael Brown, Senior Curator of European Art at The San Diego Museum of Art gives us some insight on why 𝘊𝘢𝘧𝘦́𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦-𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘤 is such a special exhibition. Due to the light-sensitive nature of works on paper, they can only be exhibited for short periods. After the exhibition closes, these works will be placed in dark storage for on average at least 10 years.

Have you ever wondered what it would look like to paint with stardust?

Ulrike Arnold does just that. Her solo presentation, 𝘚𝘬𝘺𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭, on view now in the Modern and Contemporary galleries at The San Diego Museum of Art, features works made with sand, stone, volcanic ash, and meteorite dust gathered from some of the world’s most magical landscapes. Her paintings are created outdoors, shaped by wind, light, and time, the forces of nature becoming part of the work itself.

“I’m trying to bring the essence, what I feel when I’m outside in nature, into the painting.”

The works on view are complimented by a short film by Victor van Keuren, documenting Ulrike’s remarkable process, as well as samples of the actual materials used in her paintings, bringing the experience of her practice up close and personal.

On Friday, September 11, Dr. F***y Girard, Director of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi, France joins SDMA’s Senior Curator of European Art, Dr. Michael Brown, for a conversation about Lautrec’s remarkable legacy, the international collaboration that made the exhibition possible, and the artist’s lasting influence on modern art. This engaging discussion offers audiences a deeper appreciation of the exhibition while highlighting the enduring relevance of one of France’s most celebrated artists.

Following the lecture, guests are invited to enjoy a guided docent tour of the exhibition.

Did you know the shade of red in Gallery 18 was inspired by a color Toulouse-Lautrec himself used repeatedly in his most iconic posters?

Every detail of 𝘊𝘢𝘧𝘦́𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦-𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘤 was considered, from the wall color to the layout, to immerse visitors in the world of Belle Époque Paris.

Join us on November 1 for Día de los Mu***os at The San Diego Museum of Art as we continue our year-long centennial celebration marking 100 years of The San Diego Museum of Art.

Be part of our free community event bringing together families, friends, and neighbors to honor the lives of those we have lost. It’s going to be a day of community, remembrance, and celebration.

Contribute to the community 𝘰𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢 on view in the Plaza de Panama in front of SDMA with art making activities designed by Visiting Artist Betsabeé Romero. The day-long celebration will also feature free admission to both SDMA and MOPA at SDMA.

The Taco Party, a ticketed event featuring an afternoon of unlimited taco tastings, cold drinks, art-making, and good company in the May S. Marcy Sculpture Court and Garden, further enhances the day. The Taco Party is sponsored by Museum Travel Alliance and tickets are on sale now.
