New Workshop at Tao of Clay: Korean Wheel Throwing with Jason Han

Korean Wheel Throwing | Four-Day Workshop
🗓️ October 10–11 & 17–18 | 9 AM–12 PM

Most pottery classes teach you how to throw a pot. This workshop begins with a different question: how does the way you throw change the pot you make?

Korean ceramic traditions offer a fascinating answer.

Throwing off the hump begins with a single centered mass of clay, allowing potters to work with speed, rhythm, and remarkably little trimming. But the technique is only the beginning: working this way can change the decisions you make and the pots that result.

Over four mornings, KRANE Pottery will introduce this approach step by step, drawing on more than twenty-five years of studying and working with Korean ceramic traditions.

Beginners are welcome, and experienced potters will have plenty to explore.

A follow-up conversation with joshhermanceramics, founder of Tao of Clay, on his most recent sculpture, following one that didn’t quite land the way he’d hoped.

This piece came out with an organic quality the last one never found, and Josh credits that to his letting go of the outcome and attachment to the end result. This openess frees up the making, and more dynamic, unexpected results can happen.

This one became a quiet lesson in staying present instead of forcing it.

Still reminding himself of his own lessons, almost 40 years in.

Tao of Clay is honored to welcome acclaimed Korean ceramic artist Yoo Sung for this immersive two-day workshop. Rooted in the rich traditions of Korean ceramics, Yoo Sung reinterprets historical forms through a distinctly contemporary lens, allowing the making process to guide the final form rather than imposing a predetermined outcome, a philosophy that closely aligns with the values of Tao of Clay.

Through demonstrations and guided hands-on practice, participants will learn Yoo Sung’s approach to throwing, building stable forms, and developing organic movement through thoughtful alteration and trimming.
