Awesome session today with .barnacleboys . The KU4 sounded great on the bass, but given the live nature of the tracking session it helped to add the Nadine. I’ve had it for awhile, but this was my first time getting to use it and I really thought it added to the results nicely.

Been real busy here with studio and life. I never got a chance to post about picking up these T805 analog tape machine simulators. I’m working them into my flow and have been enjoying what they do which is subtle but effective. I’ve had eyes on various hardware analog tape simulators for years, but Walters Audio really caught my attention in their deep study of the physics and behavior of magnetic recording even going as far as developing a novel analog component to produce analogous behavior without moving parts. Check out their tech papers if you’re a nerd like me.

Hi Friends! Prepping For The Studio Season 3 episode 3 is out with special guest . and I sit down with Justin to discuss how a hip hop artist or rapper ought to prep themselves for a session. We’ve talked so much about band type stuff that I thought it was important to address hip hop which is a bit different in its nature. Justin has been a long time friend and guest engineer of the studio so I thought he’d be perfect. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts or at preppingforthestudio.com .

New gear alert thanks to who moved back to San Diego from London with some gear in tow that needed a home. He’ll be a regular guest engineer here so he decided to loan me these beauties so he can use them (a win win!). Super stoked to have some new things and some additionals of others that I already have. Up first we should mention the M1, a fantastic modern tube mic. Then we’ve also got a pair of vintage .berlin KM84’s (the shorter body one has a Tuchel connector instead of XLR). Also there is a modern Neumann TLM 49 that’s sure to be interesting. And then there are some ribbon mics. A pair of Reslo’s and a pair of 4038’s (so the studio now has 4!). We also now have 4 SM7b’s (show me podcasts!). And there are also a couple M69’s (vintage West German models) and an additional D112 (hello double kick!).
Outside of mics, Conrad is also loaning the studio his Marshall JCM900 head, and a couple of amps (a modern Princeton Reverb and a vintage Bassman combo).
There’s a few more pieces to come still! Thanks ! Come and explore some sonic possibilities here at Rarefied!
