BREAKING NEWS: The City of San Diego will officially end paid parking in Balboa Park by the end of the year in a major agreement approved today by the City Council according to The San Diego Union-Tribune reporters Jeff McDonald and David Garrick reporting from City Hall.

“This is a great day for our city,” said City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn who represents the district including Balboa Park, downtown, and the LGBTQ community.

The agreement is a much needed reprieve for San Diego’s arts and culture community, especially in Balboa Park, facing the double punch of paid parking and Mayor Todd Gloria's gutting to $0 nearly $12 million of arts and culture funding grants.

Today’s decision reflects the strong public response from San Diegans who spoke out about our museums, arts, culture, and protecting access to one of our region’s most important public cultural spaces.

The deal also rolls back portions of the City’s controversial trash fee increases for single-family homeowners and settles ongoing litigation surrounding the program.

Balboa Park Parking should be free for all and especially it’s volunteers!

The House of Germany is a volunteer-run organization. This applies to all of the House of Pacific Relations HPR-international cottages and many of the museum workers. Balboa Park is particularly vibrant and captivating due to the diversity of individuals who volunteer their time and efforts in the many facilities, museums, institutions, collectives, international clubhouses, musical groups, ensembles, dance groups, singing groups, etc..
Serving everyone from veterans to children, our Balboa Park volunteers, museum workers, musicians, artists, and poets are all integral in keeping local and international traditions alive and present for young and old, as well as offering rich educational opportunities for all economic backgrounds.
This authentic energy cannot be paid for!
Only Disneyland comes close to this kind of positive interaction; the difference is that Disneyland has to pay everyone a lot of money to keep up the appearances of what we offer for free in a genuine love for what we do, for San Diego, and for Balboa Park. The City of San Diego should see each volunteer as the valuable asset (unpaid employee) that they are to our park and city.
You cannot buy love or passion; you cannot pay anyone to care the way our volunteers do. The City of San Diego should do everything in its power to support and encourage our volunteers to do the jobs that they already do (and have been doing gladly and with open hearts without pay) for the greater good of all San Diegans and our visiting tourists.
