The Mission of Playwrights Project is to empower people of all ages and backgrounds to voice stories through theatre, inspiring individual growth and creating meaningful community connections. Playwriting Classes: Schools (Grades 3-12), Current and Former Foster Youth (all ages), and Adults (ages 55 and up)

Playwriting Contests: California Young Playwrights Contest (Californians, ages 8-18), and Play by Play: Cultivating Emerging Playwrights (San Diegans, ages 19 and up)

Performances: New Play Festival (for ages 11 and up) featuring Plays by Young Writers, Community Readings (for ages 12 and up) featuring lively readings of scripts from various programs

Playwrights Project partners with San Diego State University to present the 12th season of Beyond Prison Walls!

This year’s co-production features Beyond Sentences, a play devised by our Returned Writers Circle. It presents vignettes along the prison pipeline highlighting causative factors, realities of incarceration, and the joy and struggle of reentry. Selections were written by writers who are incarcerated at Centinela and Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facilities, teens studying criminal justice, and individuals who have returned home after incarceration. Students in SDSU’s School of Theatre, Television and Film will direct and perform a staged reading of the script.

Audition for the Beyond Sentences Tour! 🎭

Beyond Sentences is a new play devised by Playwrights Project’s Returned Writers Circle. We are seeking 6 actors — 4 masc, 2 fem — to perform in schools and community venues. BIPOC actors are highly encouraged to audition.
