“Mission Blvd Palms” 12”x12” Gouache on Paper

I was planning to start a new project when I opened my larger paper portfolio and this old boy popped out. It wasn’t finished, so I finished it and im happy with the result! This little scene is right down the block from my house, and when I was walking by I loved the orange/reddish building and the green palm contrast. Why not give it a go I thought, and thus I gave it a go.

#“Sunabe Harbor, Okinawa Japan” 4.5”x7” gouache on cold press paper. I used to live in Okinawa for 3 years, and for all 3 years I lived on the seawall in Sunabe harbor, where the local fisherman would bring huge quantities of the most colorful fish you’ve ever seen to the markets. I have a huge respect for fisherman and the coast guard that keep the coastal areas safe and save lives.

“Radiant Horizon” Mission Beach CA, post fires 🔥 8.75”x6” | Gouache on Cold Press

A few weeks back we had fires in the SoCal area, and the sunsets were dramatic. I saw how the evening was shaping up, and sometimes you know nature is going to put on a show, so I got my camera and went to the beach.

This scene is exactly where the title indicates, and was taken a few months before the fire. The day was slight overcast with a bit of a haze, which I tried to capture here. I’m looking for scenes that catch my eye, and this jumped right at me. That road on the bottom right would have taken you directly into the Palisades or away from it. It’s a bittersweet kind of moment captured in time.
