Before there was a Scranton, PA, there was a Black-owned farm. In 1793, Prince Perkins and his family — free African Americans — bought 153 acres in Susquehanna County, in the Endless Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The Dennis Farm is nearly as old as America itself. 🤯

That land is still owned by their descendants today, 230+ years later. It was a secret stop on the Underground Railroad. Its cemetery — the only Black-owned cemetery in the region — holds freedom seekers who didn't make it north, alongside Black veterans of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

This is the kind of history we don't get taught enough. It's also exactly why we celebrate Black land, Black joy, and Black legacy at BlacktoberFest. 🔗 in bio for tickets — October 10, S&S Friendly Ranch.
