SDGE Energy Savings Tips

Article: 10 ENERGY-SAVING TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays are a time for joy, togetherness and twinkling lights – but they can also lead to higher energy bills. The good news? You can enjoy all the warmth and wonder of the season without overspending. With just a few simple changes, you can keep your home cozy, festive and energy efficient. Here are some easy tips to help you celebrate efficiently and save more.

1. Use LED lights: Switch to energy-efficient LED holiday lights, which use far less energy than traditional incandescent lights. LEDs last longer and are safer because they stay cool to the touch.

2. Set timers: Use timers to automatically turn your holiday lights and decorations on and off. This helps reduce unnecessary energy use by limiting operation to specific hours, rather than leaving them on all night.

3. Opt for solar-powered lights: Consider using solar-powered outdoor lights for your decorations, as they charge during the day and illuminate your outdoor space at night without using electricity.

4. Unplug decorations: Remember to unplug holiday lights and decorations when they’re not in use to prevent them from drawing power continuously.

5. Energy-efficient decorations: Choose energy-efficient decorations, such as fiber optic trees, which use less electricity than traditional lit trees.

6. Use natural light: Take advantage of natural daylight by opening curtains and blinds, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

7. Lower the thermostat: If you’re hosting guests, lower your thermostat a few degrees since the extra body heat can help keep your home warm.

8. Cook efficiently: Use appropriately sized pots and pans, cover them with lids and match them to the correct burner size. These small adjustments can help reduce cooking time and energy use during holiday meal prep.

9. Insulate windows and doors: Make sure your home is properly insulated by sealing gaps around windows and doors to prevent heat loss.

10. Save energy while cooking: For smaller dishes, try using a microwave, air fryer or slow cooker. Small appliances use less energy than large ovens.

Find more tips at sdge.com/SimpleSteps.

By following these tips, you can still enjoy a festive holiday season while staying in control of your energy use and bills.
Actual savings obtained in each instance may vary and will depend on various factors, including geographic location, weather conditions, equipment installed, usage rates and so forth.
Completing multiple energy-saving measures will not necessarily result in cumulative savings.

SAVE ENERGY THIS FALL: 10 SMART TIPS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
As the fall season settles in, small businesses have a great opportunity to cut energy costs while staying cozy and productive. Here are ten creative ways to boost energy efficiency this season:
Rethink your office layout. Maximize natural light and airflow by rearranging desks and workstations. This simple shift can reduce your reliance on artificial lighting and heating.
2. Choose laptops over desktops. Laptops use significantly less energy than desktop computers. If your team can work on laptops, you’ll see a noticeable drop in electricity use.
3. Activate power-saving settings. Enable sleep and hibernate modes on all computers and monitors. These built-in features help reduce energy use during idle times.
4. Add door sweeps. Install inexpensive door sweeps on exterior doors to block drafts and keep warm air inside.
5. Go cloud-based. Hosting servers on-site consumes a lot of energy. Switching to cloud services can reduce your energy footprint and improve scalability.
6. Apply reflective window film. These films help retain heat during cooler months and reduce glare, lowering both heating and lighting needs.
7. Time your tasks wisely. Schedule energy-intensive activities—like printing or running large equipment—during off-peak hours to take advantage of lower rates.
8. Encourage green commuting. Support biking, carpooling or public transit. Fewer cars mean less HVAC demand from frequent door openings and fewer plugged-in devices.
9. Unplug break room appliances overnight. Coffee makers, microwaves and mini-fridges can quietly drain energy. Unplug them when the office is closed.
10. Add cozy rugs to tile or hardwood floors. Rugs help insulate and retain heat while adding a warm, seasonal touch.
By thinking creatively and implementing these lesser-known strategies, your business can stay comfortable, save money and support a more sustainable future. For more tips, visit sdge.com/MyBusiness.

CUT ENERGY COSTS WHILE SUPPORTING THE GRID
Higher temperatures can mean higher energy bills and cause a big strain on the electrical grid. This can lead to a greater risk of grid emergencies. But it doesn't have to be this way.
During a grid emergency, businesses in SDG&E's service territory can participate in the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP). By joining ELRP, businesses help support the grid when it's facing extra strain and can get a bill credit for their participation. ELRP is a flexible way to get incentives for shifting energy use.
Participating in ELRP allows qualified businesses to contribute to stabilizing the grid and reducing the risk of issues without worrying about any financial penalties. For more information about ELRP, visit sdge.com/ELRP.

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU SAVE ON YOUR BUSINESS ENERGY COSTS DURING LATE SUMMER DAYS
Summer might officially be ending, but in San Diego it’s the time of year when the heat really picks up – and so can cooling costs for your business. It’s important to understand your available pricing plans, programs and tips to help you manage your energy costs.
Tip #1: Know your energy pricing plan.
Energy costs are about how much energy your business uses and when. If you’re on a plan that participates in event days, your business could be called to conserve energy from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. when there is high demand on the power grid. If you’re unable to conserve, this could add considerable energy costs. Ensure your business is on the right plan by logging into MyEnergyCenter.com. Select billing, programs, pricing plans.
Tip #2: Ensure efficient cooling.
Cooling costs make up around 40% of energy costs for commercial buildings. Making sure your HVAC system is maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions can make a big difference. Confirm condenser coils are cleaned, change filters regularly and check ducts and pipe insulation for damage.
Tip #3: Use advanced power strips.
Power strips are designed to cut off power to devices that are not in use. They can detect when a device is in standby mode and automatically shut off power to it which prevents unnecessary energy use.
#4: Insulate your building.
Proper insulation can help reduce your heating and cooling costs. You’ll also maintain a consistent temperature, minimize external and internal noises and lower your business’s carbon footprint.
Tip #5: Sign up for alerts.
You can sign up for alerts that help you track your energy usage or notify you in the event of a power outage. Learn more at sdge.com/alerts.
For more tips on how to save energy, visit sdge.com/MyBusiness.
Actual savings obtained in each instance may vary and will depend on various factors, including geographic location, weather conditions, equipment installed, usage rates and similar factors. Completing multiple energy-saving measures will not necessarily result in cumulative savings.

CHANGES ARE COMING TO YOUR ELECTRIC BILL – LEARN WHAT’S NEW
This fall, your SDG&E® bill will show electric delivery charges in a new way. This is not an extra charge, rather it is a change in how your bill is structured.
Why is this happening?
California Assembly Bill 205 requires electric utilities across the state to change how residential customers are billed to help make bills more transparent, while making it more affordable to use electric technologies, such as cars and appliances.
What’s changing?
We’re updating how some existing costs appear on your bill. Starting soon, you’ll see a new line item called the Base Services Charge. Most customers will pay approximately $24 a month1. Customers enrolled in FERA and CARE will automatically receive a discounted Base Services Charge of approximately $12 and $6, respectively.
The Base Services Charge covers some of the fixed costs that were previously included in the electric delivery price like customer service, transformers and meters that help ensure safe, reliable electric delivery to your property. By moving some costs out of delivery pricing, you may pay about 10% less per kWh for the energy you use (roughly 5 cents per kWh on electric delivery)2. Each customer’s usage varies, so lower electricity prices may or may not lead to a lower total bill. Because this is a reallocation of costs, SDG&E will not earn more profit from this change.
To learn more, visit sdge.com/BaseServicesCharge or call 1-800-411-7343.
1 Base Services Charge may vary based on the number of days in the billing month. Most customers will pay between $22.22 – $26.18, and $11.11 – $13.10 for FERA customers and $5.52 – $6.51 for CARE customers. For details on how your Base Services Charge will be calculated, visit sdge.com/BaseServicesCharge.
2 Actual price reductions will vary depending on your rate plan, commodity provider, electricity usage and the rates effective at the time of Base Services Charge implementation.

STAY COOL, SAVE GREEN: ENERGY TIPS FOR YOUR BUSINESS
August heat can push energy use and costs higher. But with a few smart strategies, your business can stay cool, save money and support a more sustainable future. Here are 10 energy-saving tips to help you beat the heat and boost efficiency:
Shift energy use to off-peak hours: Run high-energy equipment before 4 p.m. or after 9 p.m. when energy demand (and prices) can be lower.
Use fans strategically: Ceiling and portable fans can help circulate air and reduce the need for constant A/C. Just remember to turn them off when rooms are unoccupied. Fans cool people, not rooms!
Upgrade to ENERGY STAR® appliances: If you're replacing equipment, choose ENERGY STAR-rated models. They use less energy and often qualify for rebates.
Seal air leaks: Check for drafts around doors, windows and vents. Sealing leaks helps keep cool air in and hot air out.
Install motion sensors: In break rooms, restrooms and storage areas, motion-sensor lighting can cut down on unnecessary energy use.
Encourage unplugging: Ask employees to unplug chargers and devices at the end of the day to reduce phantom energy drain.
Check your pricing plan: Make sure your business is on the most cost-effective pricing plan. Visit sdge.com/MyBusiness to compare options.
Schedule an energy audit: Energy assessments can help identify savings opportunities tailored to your business.
Keep vents clear: Make sure furniture or equipment isn’t blocking air vents. This helps your HVAC system work more efficiently.
Promote a culture of conservation: Small actions add up. Encourage staff to power down, report energy waste and share ideas for saving.
Energy efficiency is good for your bottom line and the planet. For more tools, rebates, and personalized support, visit sdge.com/MyBusiness.
Actual savings obtained in each instance may vary and will depend on various factors, including geographic location, weather conditions, equipment installed, usage rates, and similar factors. Completing multiple energy-saving measures will not necessarily result in cumulative savings.

Example: Shift energy use to off-peak hours: Run high-energy equipment before 4 p.m. or after 9 p.m. when energy demand (and prices) can be lower. Visit sdge.com/MyBusiness for more helpful energy-saving tips.

DISCOVER ENERGY-SAVING TIPS FOR A COOLER SUMMER
As the sun’s rays intensify, so does our reliance on air conditioning. Let’s explore ways to keep your home cool while trimming energy bills, plus other energy-saving tips.
Skip the heated dry on your dishwasher: Use the air-dry setting or open the door after the final rinse to let dishes dry naturally.
Cool down with a fan: Use ceiling and tabletop fans to cool off and leave the thermostat at a higher temperature. Turn fans off when you leave a room; fans cool people, not rooms.
Fire up the grill: Take the heat out of your kitchen by cooking outside. It’s also a good excuse to enjoy the outdoors with your family.
Delay chores: Shift some chores like laundry and running the dishwasher outside of the on-peak hours from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Save even more if you do laundry on the weekends before 2 p.m.
Give your natural gas clothes dryer time off: Consider outdoor line-drying on sunny, breezy days to save on natural gas costs.
Use less hot water: Water heating accounts for 18% of your home’s total energy use, per Energy.gov. The longer you run hot water, the higher your energy use and bills. To save, turn the temperature on your water heater down a little and insulate your water heater and pipes.
Block the sun: During the heat of the day, cover windows to block the sun’s heat. If you can, open windows at night and in the early morning to let in cool air.
Charge devices while you sleep: Before going to bed, plug your devices in so they can recharge during super off-peak hours when energy is less expensive.
Clean behind your refrigerator. Dusty coils make your fridge work harder. Cleaning them every 6 months can help improve efficiency.
Use cold water for laundry. Most detergents work just as well in cold water. Heating water accounts for a big chunk of energy use when you do laundry.
