Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning at Chollas Lake Park for our Black Birders Week Community Bird Walk!

We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible bird leaders, Caliph Assagai, Roslyn Rivas, and Andrew Hawkins, for generously sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm, and love of birds with our community. Special thanks to SoCal Bird Nerds and San Diego Bird Alliance for their partnership and commitment to making birding accessible, welcoming, and fun for all.

We also thank Chollas Lake Park and San Diego Parks and Recreation for stewarding this beautiful outdoor space where people can connect with nature, community, and local wildlife.

Founded in 2020 by Black Birders Week shines a light on the importance of representation, visibility, and belonging in outdoor spaces. It reminds us that nature belongs to everyone and that all people deserve to feel safe, welcomed, and included while exploring the outdoors. Birding offers opportunities to slow down, reduce stress, improve mental and physical well-being, build community, and deepen our connection to the natural world.

A special shoutout to the Celebrate Urban Birds program of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for supporting community science and helping people of all backgrounds discover the birds around them. Together, we observed and listened to a total of 18 bird species during our walk!

As we continue celebrating Black Birders Week and its theme of freedom, advocacy, and inclusion, we invite everyone to keep looking up, listening closely, and exploring the nature that surrounds us.

Birding is for all, and everyone can be a birder.

Meet Makeda Dread Cheatom, one of our bird outing leader for

Makeda’s love of birds began in childhood when she received a subscription to Audubon magazine, sparking a lifelong curiosity about the natural world. Growing up exploring San Diego’s canyons and spending time in the diverse landscapes of Anza-Borrego, Julian’s mountains, and the region’s coastal habitats, she developed a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife. Today, she advocates for equitable access to outdoor spaces, believing that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy, wonder, and healing that nature provides.

Black Birders Week reminds us that outdoor spaces and nature belong to everyone. Birding is for all of us, and the bird leaders guiding our upcoming outing on Saturday, May 30 are everyday community members who simply love connecting with nature and sharing that joy with others.

Meet Caliph, one of bird outing leaders 🐦‍⬛

Caliph Assagai is a birder, surfer, snorkeler, hiker, and all-around nature nerd who loves being outdoors and introducing others to the joy of nature. Originally from Sacramento, California, he began birding after moving to San Diego and noticing Redhead ducks gathering in Mission Bay. Since then, he has traveled for birding, volunteered with the SoCal Bird Nerds community, and led bird walks throughout San Diego. His spark bird is the Cedar Waxwing, and his 2026 Bird of the Year is the Wilson’s Warbler.
