BCSD's recent season closing performances included 3 spirituals sandwiched betwixt JSB's 'Actus Tragicus' and Telemann's 'Du aber, Daniel' (more on that later).

One of the featured spirituals was the deeply rich 'Steal away to Jesus'...exquisitely served up by the inimitable Reginald Mobley - Countertenor (Steal away, arr. Mobley/Valenzuela/The Holy Spirit)

Arsilda:

Disguise, desire, and political intrigue drive Vivaldi’s rarely staged Arsilda, regina di Ponto, a fast-moving drama of love and hidden identity. After Prince Tamese is believed lost at sea in a shipwreck, his sister Lisea disguises herself as her brother to secure the kingdom’s future, only to find herself betrothed to his fiancée. Vivaldi’s brilliant score shifts effortlessly between comic sparkle and psychological depth. Opera Neo’s American premiere of Arsilda offers a captivating theatrical ride and a timeless meditation on love, identity, and renewal.

Date & Time: May 15 and 16 at 7:30pm
First Unitarian Universalist Church
4190 Front Street, San Diego, CA 92103
Tickets & Information: https://www.operaneo.com/arsilda

Fausto:

Long before Gounod’s famous Faust, a 26-year-old French composer, Louise Bertin, took on Goethe’s epic drama and created something entirely her own. Raw, visceral, and unfiltered, Fausto unfolds as the story of an aging, disillusioned scientist who strikes a desperate bargain with the Devil to reclaim youth and pursue pleasure. Blending classical elegance with romantic intensity, Bertin offers a strikingly eclectic yet deeply personal musical voice. Both bold and deeply human, Opera Neo’s American premiere of Fausto invites audiences to rediscover a forgotten masterpiece and encounter a uniquely youthful female perspective on one of Western culture’s most enduring stories.

Date & Time: June 26 and 27 at 7:30pm
Old Town Theater
4040 Twiggs Street, San Diego, CA 92110

Il Turco in Italia:

Rossini’s Il turco in Italia is a witty, self-aware comedy fueled by curiosity, attraction, and cultural collision. When a Turkish traveler and a free-spirited Italian woman meet, their mutual fascination ignites a whirlwind of romantic confusion, comic chaos, and sharp social satire. Sparkling with effervescent ensembles and impeccable comedic timing, the opera offers a playful yet pointed look at love, identity, and the challenge of being true to oneself. With this production, Opera Neo continues its beloved tradition of performing in the Spanish Village Art Center at Balboa Park.
