I just got back from the most amazing experience in the UK. I have been following and for a while and have really wanted to take the sculpture courses they offer. When 2026 courses opened up last year, I wasn’t in a position to be able to travel but registered for it anyway thinking I would just cancel it later if I couldn’t make it work.
Turns out I didn’t have to cancel and was able to attend this workshop! I can’t even begin to describe this experience for me. I wanted to take this course for a lot of reasons but mostly to get out of my comfort zone and really push myself to see what I could do and I ended up really surprising myself.
I went into this experience with an open mind and came out with a new skill set… and new friends. A lot of this has to do with the instructor . He is thorough, patient and very hands on with his instruction. He has created a very safe and welcoming space for all skill levels, which is reflected in the students he attracts. All of my classmates were kind, warm and funny 😊 It was a very collaborative, not competitive environment. As an American I was a little worried about how I was going to be received but not once did I feel like an outsider. James even brought out Oreos along with the British biscuits to make sure I wasn’t left out 😄
The photos I’ve included here are just a few glimpses into the 3 day course I took. The studio is on the most beautiful land with daily visits from the highland cows. The class size is perfect. Everyone got lots of group and 1:1 instruction as needed. I was not confident that I was going to make a decent looking piece. You can see my progress through these pics and vids and the transformation that happened as time went on. I really had to trust the process and took a lot of coaching tips and direction from James to come out with something I’m quite proud of.
