MEET THE FOUNDERS: Elsa Martinez
Received her degree at UCLA (BA Italian Major/Theater Minor). Her passion for the Italian language and training as an actor have converged with the world of Commedia dell’Arte and inspired her to pursue research on the Renaissance Jewish Italian playwright Leone de’Sommi as an independent scholar. She is working on a full-length play based on Queen Isabel of Spain and themes related to the expulsion of the Jews and Muslims from Spain. A proud member of Amigos del Rep (San Diego Repertory Theater) and Co-Founder of the award-winning Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble based in Santa Ana, California. Her recent acting credits include Amor y Muerte, A Cuban People’s Christmas, Medea, Beachtown, Fabulous Monsters, El Nogalar, King Liz, Manifest Destinitis, Love, Loss, And What I Wore and In the Time of the Butterflies. Her greatest role is that of mother to three sons and one daughter. A grateful refugee born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Los Angeles, California.

MEET THE FOUNDERS:
Carla Alegre is a Latina actress who was born and raised in Lima, Peru where she performed in theater and TV productions. She moved to Chicago and received her BA in Theatre Performance from Loyola University. She was also the director of the Outreach program at Chicago Fusion Theatre.
Most of her career has been performed in English as well as Spanish. Some of her acting credits include: Amor y Muerte by Charo Gonzalez Casas, Un by Tuyo Theater (Lyceum Theatre), Fefu and Her Friends by Maria Irene Fornes, Big Love by Charles L. Mee (Royal George Theatre), The Boy in Black by Tony Meneses (Royal George Theatre), Blood Weeding and Yerma By Federico Garcia Lorca (Goodman Theatre Latino Festival), La Muerte del Maestro (Tympanic Theatre), Letters from Cuba (Halcyon Theatre), Fragment (Steppenwolf Theatre).
Carla is much honored to be involved with the Latino Theater community in San Diego and to be part of Amigos Del Rep team. Carla has also worked in TV shows, Commercials and Voice Overs and “as a good Latina she loves to dance.” Carla also works as a Spanish-English medical, legal and community interpreter.

Teatro ConAmor is a Spanish-language performance group based in San Diego, California. We produce Spanish-language theatre in our community and beyond through online and in-person events that celebrate Hispanic culture and the Spanish language by presenting works from around the world.

We aim to:
• Promote cross cultural understanding
• Provide a space for playwrights to share their works with new audiences
• Explore how pieces from different time periods and countries speak to our lives today
• Develop relationships with Spanish language educators
• Create a venue for students of Spanish to use their language skills
