Showing up to the desk isn’t always about the perfect portraits but the simple exercises where most of the learning takes place. That eye sketch was a big jump for me because just adding a little bit of watercolor felt intimidating. Practicing skin colors in color pencils is more about the patience of laying colors and understanding that skin is not one color but a mix. Amazing what you can accomplish with either one grey watercolor pan or with three coloring pencils

Drawing with pen is so scary at first. You can’t erase any mistakes. But then you figure out how to create different shades with just pressure and it becomes such a fun challenge to trying to generate those different tones.

Getting caught up with the portrait from Day 6: I was so excited to work with my Inktense pencil but underestimated the importance of having good watercolor paper so I had to stop adding water to the actual face. Oh well, I’m still happy with the result and I do love using coloring pencils for these portraits. Thank you for another great lesson in drawing children portraits

Day 17: today was about playing with different instruments and inks. It was not an exercise on accuracy but more about experimentation. I LOVE my brown inks and it was fun to just let loose. Day 16: drawing kids is hard! You are oh so slightly off and you make them look 7 years older… also, taking pictures of these portraits late at night is no easy task. The white gouache touches are much softer in the original. Thank you for a great class and a wonderful model in your son
