FREE DYE WORKSHOP TONIGHT MONDAY AUGUST 11TH AT 6PM PACIFIC ON www.youtube.com/nicolefrostyarn

So, I got fired from a teaching gig this morning.

No details were given beyond "my teaching style didn't work for them."

October is 17 years of teaching how to dye yarn, it was bound to happen that a client's expectations and my skill set wouldn't be a match. Even though I'm 42 I cried in that "dark night of the soul" way that one does when they're faced with the question "am I even good enough to be doing this anymore?"

So, to take some of the pain out of this whole experience, I'll be teaching a free class tonight with the materials I already spent weeks preparing!

Tag a friend and pop your questions in the comments below and I'll answer as many as I can in the format tonight.

You'll also get a behind the scenes look at some of the materials I've spent the summer making for a chapter of the book.

So I had this idea while I was editing an ice melt video: What if I put the dye directly in the ice cube with soda ash instead of on top of the ice. Would that change things? For science, I did the same amount of dye in each silicone ice mold with 10 ml of water, 20 ml of water and 30 ml of water.

Please join me in a round of BOOOOO's for myself, because I accidentally folded one of the swatches wrong and the melt pattern was sideways :/

As you can see from the melt patterns at the different cube sizes, the smaller cubes have more distinct, richer colors. The larger cube sizes are somewhat overblended and the yellow almost entirely disappears.

And just for SCIENCE, I did a dye under ice versus dye over ice using a black ice cube to see if we get any oil slick effects or just a general muddying of the colors.

And here we have an honorable mention for the ugly awards. Letting the black ice drain through completely distorted the colors instead of sitting in the muck gave no clear melt pattern and some very faded, irregular color dispersion.

The goal is oilslick, and as you can see, I’ve got a ways to go.

If this looks like your idea of fun, come join me in Minneapolis at the Textiles Center Friday, May 9th for my brand new workshop Meltdown with the Frosts, the Luck of the Thaw

This class is for anyone who wants to dive into dyeing cellulose, making their own dyed fabric for their sewing projects, anyone who wants to spice up their wardrobe with modern day tie dye pieces

Hope to see you there! Tickets available here: https://textilecentermn.org/product/melt-down-with-the-frost-ice-dyeing-on-yarn-and-fabric/

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, but this picture is worth 1,000 minutes.

Each action performed taking just a few seconds to cut, tie, twist, label and mount on top of dyeing in super precise increments, photographing, light balancing, editing and uploading. So easy and quick, until you add all those steps up times a hundred.

I wish so desperately I had someone to guide me when I started my dye journey in 2008. I was clueless, eager, and broke. I wasted years spinning my wheels making ugly yarn, or worse, *pretty yarn* that knit up ugly 😭

But since there's no body doubling time travel teleportato yet, I help others who want to delve into the ancient art of textiles chemistry.

Come skip the miserable phase and jump right into the fun with all the tools and supports necessary to build a technique and color swatch library with me at Nov 1, 2 &3.

The space is enormous, beautiful, fully equipped and staffed with some of the best humans I've ever met. I hope to see you there🌈

Join me, Nicole Frost of Frost Yarn for a comprehensive 3-day immersion into the world of yarn dyeing this coming Friday October 4-Sunday Oct 6th.

https://www.smallspaceart.com/service-page/yarn-dyeing-3-day-immersion

This course is designed for both beginners and experienced artists, offering a thorough exploration of every major technique. By the end of this experience, you'll be equipped to: - Dye yarn with confidence and control - Have a deep understanding of color theory - Create stunning, custom colorways for your knitting, crocheting, or weaving projects - Match yarn to your vision for a truly personalized outcome

🌈 Day 1: Learn how to dye with precision and repeatability. Make a triad of 66 unique colors from 3 primary colors, with the option to make a 12 color triad with 3 colors and a saturation study to learn the difference between a balanced and unbalanced color story. Then learn how to kettle dye, speckle, and direct application paint for forced pooling.

🌈Day 2: Learn how to translate an image into a colorway and explore additional techniques. You will create a resist dyed colorway that moves in multiple directions simultaneously, one of Nicole's signature techniques. Create a technique study on mini skeins featuring mohair, alpaca, superwash merino, non superwash merino and silk yarn. We end day 2 ombre painting pre knit blanks and stenciling artwork over the top with thickened dyes.

🌈Day 3: Use Nicole's knitting machines to create a swatch library of the different techniques and create a reference book. The dye lab will be open and Nicole will be available for student questions, troubleshooting, or to have a free day to play and paint.

Students photographed in the beautiful space during our 1 day intensive are

who all create super rad fiber art and are worth following to see their dye adventures unfold!

Any SoCal locals on this page?

You should come take a mini macrame with through .space.collective!

This will be my first craft date night in the 13+ years my husband and I have been together 🎨👩🏼‍🎨🧶🧵

The best part of social media for me has been the connection to other craft folx that I would otherwise never meet.

I was lucky enough to have Alex / as a student in my dye workshop yesterday and now I get to take her class in a few weeks.

This is the stuff that makes my heart burst with joy.
Would love to meet any fellow fiber folk from the interwebs!

I am so excited about the new visual aids I created this week for the presentation tomorrow at on how to "read" a skein of yarn.

🧶Perfectly speckled in the skein, but an overwhelming mess in the project? We'll dive in with 11 swatches of different speckle densities and painted application patterns so you can learn to better visualize how it works up and pick skeins with confidence. 👓

🧶Does variegated yarn confuse you? So pretty in the skein, and a monstrous clown barf in your sweater or shawl? We'll do a deep dive on balanced vs unbalanced variegation, the differences between high/mid/low variegation and what types of patterns do and don't work with these temperamental beauties 💄👑

🧶Intrigued (but also intimidated) by the planned pooling yarns, how they work, and what to look for when matching to a project? I have swatches of multiple cast ons of the same colorways demonstrated flat, in the round and in a project. These are my favorite to knit because a river of rainbows fly off your fingertips when the pooling yarn and pooling pattern hit just right ✅️

Tomorrow Dec 9th from 2-3 PM, call to reserve your spot in this free workshop today!
