California Guitars

California Guitars "Find the guitar you left behind..." Most of the guitars we build are done for a specific client, but that is not always the case.

Our guitars take between 8-12 weeks to complete and there is a growing waiting list for these engagements. At any given time, we will have a few unclaimed "orphans" that are waiting to find their owner.

Guitar of the Week (GOTW)…

The Reverend “Buckshot”. Super versatile with the conventional tele-esque bridge augmented by a very useful mini-humbucking pickup in the neck position. Throw in a bass contour control and this guitar covers a lot of territory.

Come by or make an appointment to check out the “Buckshot” and other great Reverend guitars…

Where you ask? California Guitars in Belmont, of course.

My Reverend Rave

First, a disclaimer…

This is not intended as an advertisement or a promotional piece. My hope is that you will see this post as
1.) informational in its intent/content and
2.) an invitation to come take a look at a line of guitars to which you may not have had easy access.

I should say up front that I did not want to like the Reverend guitar. They were different-looking and I was accustomed to playing my Fender and Gibson-inspired electrics. I blame my friends at Guitar Player Magazine for breaking down the barrier and before long, that first gold Contender had wandered into my little shop. That guitar immediately won me over.

I’ve been playing Reverend Guitars for a few years now and here are my takeaways:

• Design: Joe Naylor has been a rule-breaker in the design of the Reverend guitar. From unique body shapes, tonewoods, edgy pickguards and elegant binding schemes to innovative pickups and circuits, Reverend Guitars has been willing to take chances and stands as a creatively different option in a sea of sameness.
• Quality: Growing from modest beginnings in Detroit to successfully scaling operations and building instruments in S. Korea requires intense focus on quality control. Moving their stateside operations to Toledo, Reverend has invested heavily in a technical staff dedicated to assuring the quality of each guitar they ship. The difference is noticeable…these guitars are really ready to go, out of the box.
• Value: At a time when the costs involved and the prices for nearly everything are headed skyward, Reverend has remained committed to holding their price points. When compared to alternatives in the $1K range, these guitars are very hard to beat.

We had been on the fence about getting started with Reverend. I reckoned that there were plenty of places to test-drive (and buy) these guitars, but there were not! Sure, you could order from internet sellers, but there was no place to get your hands on these guitars (continued)…
