San Mateo County Fair – June 6–14, 2026 🎉
I submitted nine entries to the San Mateo County Fair this year and was excited to bring home five awards! 🏆
✨ 2 Second Place Awards
✨ 1 Third Place Award
✨ 2 Honorable Mentions
The awards came from several categories, including a metal print of one of my original mosaic artworks and a portrait photograph from my Morocco trip earlier this year.
The Fine Arts exhibit is amazing, with so many talented artists and an incredible variety of artwork on display. You can easily spend hours exploring the exhibits—and that's before enjoying all the rides, entertainment, food, animals, and other fun activities the fair has to offer!
If you're planning a visit, be sure to leave plenty of time to discover all the creativity and inspiration waiting inside the Fine Arts building. 🎨❤️

This piece was inspired by a beautiful photograph taken by my photographer friend, Can Doan. At first, I thought it would be a straightforward mosaic to create, but it turned out to be one of the most challenging pieces I have worked on. In fact, it took more than three months just to design the wave section. The most time-consuming part of the process was figuring out how to interpret the wave so it would appear three-dimensional.
After several attempts and experimenting with different materials, I finally chose a combination of fused tempered glass and white ceiling lamp glass. In some areas, I used two layers of glass to better convey the full volume of water inside the wave.
Another challenge was extending the movement of the wave on the right side, since the original photograph did not show how the wave continues beyond the frame. Although designing this piece was demanding, I truly enjoyed the process because it stimulated my creativity and pushed my thinking in new directions.
This piece will be featured in my solo exhibition at KALEID Gallery in downtown San Jose this April, titled “Bridging Horizons: Mosaics by Xuan My Ho & Paintings from Vietnam.” In addition to my mosaic artwork, the exhibition will also introduce acrylic and oil paintings by artists from Vietnam as part of a fundraising effort to support community needs in Vietnam.
