Filmmaker to filmmaker: The project is more than a great story. The lesson I learned, if I want investors to come into a project, my team had to understand and convey that the movie project was a business. So much to think about…
“Who are you making it for? How marketable is the script?
What will it logistically cost to make? How will the project make the money back? Can it generate revenue? How much revenue can the movie make? Lows and highs predictions?"
Last but not least - what about its longevity? Does it have social relevance? Because that’s the purpose of a movie right? Story has impact... but can your story continue through to sequels, episodic content, licensing, merchandise, or other platforms?
What brands, products, communities, or local economies could naturally become part of its journey?
See how these things matter. That’s the business and beauty of it. Building a creative business.
We live in Silicon Valley, where everyone talks about Unicorns. I’m not saying every movie can become a unicorn—but we’ve all seen micro budget films achieve extraordinary results. What do we call those??? You get the concept.
On Thursday, August 20, a collective of independent filmmakers from around the country will pitch their projects in front of Silicon Valley investors at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. They have more to offer that just the story.
So, to the filmmakers, writers, directors, and producers reading this: come see how projects are pitched with both the creative vision and the business strategy up front.
Let’s create more transparency. Recognize potential early. Build the right team. Understand the audience. Work humanly intelligent, to create something that can grow in value.
Let’s learn how to speak one another’s language so independent filmmakers and investors can build stronger partnerships, showcase meaningful work, and operate in greater synchronicity. Why can't our purpose can be unified?
Doors open at 6:00 PM. Come early for happy hour, cocktails, and conversation.
