SAN BENITO — For his family and fans, the opening of the Freddy Fender Museum keeps alive the spirit of one of the Rio Grande Valley’s biggest legends.

Conjunto music was born in South Texas in the early 20th century when Mexican and Mexican-American musicians combined the button accordion introduced by German and Czech immigrants with the bajo sexto and the musical traditions of northern Mexico.

Narciso Martínez of the Rio Grande Valley, known as the Father of Conjunto, helped develop the distinctive accordion style that defined the genre during the 1930s.

Conjunto became the soundtrack of working-class Mexican-American Texas and went on to influence Tejano, norteño, and regional Mexican music throughout the United States and Mexico.

One of Texas's most influential musical traditions began not in a concert hall, but in the dance halls, farms, ranches, and small communities of South Texas. 🎵🪗

RSVP to join us for the next installment of the Mixta Cultura Plática y Merienda Series featuring a special community zine workshop with Joseph Decilos ✂️📚✨

Using colorful paper, collage techniques, and photographs from the Rio Grande Valley, participants will create their own mini zines inspired by storytelling, identity, culture, and community. Rooted in Joseph’s documentary practice and love for zine-making, this workshop invites participants to reflect on personal and collective experiences through images and creative sequencing.

Raised in South Texas and now based in New York, Joseph Decilos is a visual documentarian and artist whose work explores themes of faith, folklore, migration, q***r spaces, and the cultural intersections that shape life along the borderlands.

The San Benito Cultural Arts Department extends our deepest gratitude to the VA team, especially Dr. Carmona, and the dedicated veteran volunteers who helped lead “Unmasking the Silence: Healing Through Art.”

We are honored to partner in creating a space rooted in trust, care, and creative expression—where Veterans can navigate their healing journeys at their own pace and on their own terms. Your compassion, leadership, and commitment to service continue to make a meaningful impact in our community.
