The San Benito Cultural Center is pleased to announce the opening of Cruzando Fronteras, a compelling textile art exhibition by acclaimed South Texas College professor Leila Hernandez. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to October 12, 2024.
Cruzando Fronteras (Crossing Borders) is an exploration of cultural and personal narratives, expressed through two distinct series of textile art. The first series "The Tapestries" features rich, textured tapestries crafted on bed sheets, symbolizing personal and intimate perspectives. These pieces invite viewers to participate in a discussion about migration and immigration.
The second series, "Las Labores", is a collection of framed quilts comprising 24 squares. The title uses the Spanish term for "jobs" or "work" to represent various forms of household employment, such as gardening, maid services, cooking, nannying, lawn maintenance, and house cleaning.
“This exhibition is an artistic response to the cultural physical fluidity of this border region. The work utilizes traditional craft techniques through a contemporary lens to initiate a dialogue about migration and immigration,” explains Aleida Garcia, Director of the San Benito Cultural Center and the Department of Cultural Arts. “It is Professor Hernandez’s most recent exploration of the nuances of migration and borders.”
