The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center was founded by a group of San Antonio artists who were determined to play a critical role in shaping the artistic and cultural experiences of San Antonio’s residents and visitors alike. Nearly thirty-four years ago this band of artists formed a pro-active group called the Performance Artists’ Nucleus (PAN). They represented different organizations that were seeking municipal funds to support their work and to preserve and promote the rich traditions of Latino culture. PAN’s tireless efforts was an effective force to widen the lens for the general public who began to understand that cultural traditions were disappearing and to realize that vital decisions were being made for the Latino community without their input. PAN’s activism was its strength. The original artists’ commitment to preserve and promote Chicano culture by securing municipal funding marked the beginning of the Center as it operates today: a multidisciplinary cultural arts center with six disciplines and among the nation’s first Chicano organizations to collaborate with Mexican artists and cultural institutions, commission and present new works and to pioneer in community cultural education. As a result, the Center is one of the City of San Antonio’s five major cultural organizations. Since its inception, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center has either introduced, showcased or fostered the talents of almost every major Chicano/Latino visual artist, filmmaker, playwright, actor, writer, folkloric dancer/choreographer, or Chicano musician in the United States today. The Center, unique among Latino organizations for its scope of interests, its communlty education classes, and its encompassing humanities and arts programming, was unrivalled in the U.S. Today, inspired by the Guadalupe, other Latino centers have taken root across the nation, however the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center remains a national model, still unequalled in Texas and the Southwest. The Center now consists of six buildings: the Progreso Drugstore; the Cesar Chavez Building; the Museo Guadalupe, containing exhibition space, educational facilities, dance studios and the administrative offices for the GCAC; the 376-seat, historic Guadalupe Theater. With its distinctive neon-encircled spire rising above its cobalt blue and pumpkin orange tiled exterior, the theater has long been a community landmark, and is now the centerpiece of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Built in 1942, it anchored a thriving entertainment district. Other buildings include La Casita future home of the “Hecho a Mano Tienda” and the Guadalupanita Cafe – a recently aquired Mexican restaurant with historic significance.

Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Announces Open Auditions for the Returning Play “Las Comadres de Morales St.” by Irene Chavez
SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 2, 2026) – The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) is pleased to announce open auditions for the much-anticipated return of the beloved stage production “Las Comadres de Morales St.” by playwright Irene Chavez and directed by Ruby Ruiz. Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Latino Bookstore, located at 1300 Guadalupe St., San Antonio, TX 78207.

The production team is seeking performers to fill three key roles:
• “Don Julio” – Carmen’s boyfriend. Vietnam Veteran, age range 70–80, Male
• “Izzy” – Unemployed and divorced, age range 30–35, Male
• “Angel of Death” – Latina, any age, Female

“Las Comadres de Morales St.” is a cherished work that highlights the richness, resilience, and humor of our community. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is proud to reintroduce this play to San Antonio audiences and invites actors who are committed to authentic storytelling to audition for these roles.

AUDITION PREPARATION
Prospective cast members are encouraged to bring a recent photo (head shot) and a performance résumé. While not required, it is recommended.

All auditions will be held in person at the Guadalupe Latino Bookstore, a landmark space dedicated to preserving and promoting Latino, Chicano, and Native America literary arts and culture located in San Antonio’s Westside.

Spend an afternoon with authors Rosie Carbó and Natalia Treviño, whose new books explore motherhood, migration, resilience, sacrifice, and self-determination.

Carbó, author of Maria Antonia y sus retoños: Legacies of Motherhood, and Treviño, author of The Road Back, will be joined by poet, scholar, and educator Jen Yáñez-Alaniz, who will lead the conversation.

Many of our supporters may be aware that central/west San Antonio suffered severe damages in a storm Friday night. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Campus is fine, though power outages did force us to close operations on Saturday. However the crisis in our neighborhood continues - power has not been restored in part of the west side, now on the third day, in 100 degree sweltering heat.

In Homeboys Forever, Valdez examines the long-term impact of gang life among men from San Antonio’s Westside and asks readers to look beyond individual circumstances to better understand the systemic inequalities that shape lives and communities.

Thank you to San Antonio Express-News for featuring this weekend's Teatro Salon's Table Readers Series, "Welcome to the Neighborhood," as part of its top things to do this weekend. Come out and meet Marissa Castañón-Hernández, an Austin-based, award-winning playwright and educator, who will be featuring her play on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Latino Bookstore. The reading is directed by Guadalupe's Clint Taylor.

Synopsis: Set in a suburban Texas community, Welcome to the Neighborhood explores the mounting tensions among neighbors as personal beliefs collide with contemporary social and political divisions. When a conflict escalates to a dangerous breaking point, the Virgen de Guadalupe appears in a miraculous moment. In the aftermath, as the community awaits her return, the neighbors begin to confront their differences and discover a shared capacity for forgiveness, understanding, and acceptance.
