iLaCatrina® presents Catrina Ocelotl (Jaguar in Nahuatl), inspired by the warrior spirit of the Mexica jaguar warriors and the sacred ritual of competition in ancient Mesoamerica.

In Mexica culture, the Ocelotl, or Jaguar Warrior, was one of the highest military ranks, reserved for elite warriors recognized for bravery and the capture of enemies in battle. More than a powerful animal, the jaguar symbolized strength, night, agility, and the sun’s journey through darkness.

The jaguar remains a powerful cultural icon of Mexico, reflected on the world stage through the spirit of the mascot Zayu, a jaguar representing unity, strength, and joy.

Yet the connection between Mexico, competition, and the jaguar reaches back thousands of years. Long before modern soccer was invented, the peoples of Mesoamerica were already playing ritual ballgames that honored movement, strategy, and ceremonial competition. While Jaguar Warriors did not play the sacred ballgame itself, the spirit of the Ocelotl embodied the strength, discipline, and resilience required in ritual competition.

Inspired by these ancestral traditions, Catrina Ocelotl reimagines the spirit of the jaguar through contemporary cultural storytelling, honoring unity, strength, agility, and courage across generations.

Catrina Acocoxochitl represents the dahlia flower, the ancestral bloom of Mexico and its official national symbol, rooted in the land long before it was named. With more than 40 native species and thousands of cultivated varieties, it reflects the depth, diversity, and resilience of Mexican identity.

The dahlia was an important source of food and medicine for the Aztecs, who also used its hollow stems for irrigation and water transport, before arriving in Spain in 1789, where it quickly captivated Europe. Considered Montezuma’s favorite flower, its legacy has been shaped as much by myth as by history, transforming a native plant into a symbol reimagined across cultures and time.

As part of the Inspiring Heritage and the Xochitl collection, this Catrina embodies the language of flowers as memory and offering. She is holding am offering inspired by the radial symmetry of the dahlia where symmetry speaks of balance, cosmos, and continuity, and beauty is understood as history in motion and culture alive in every detail.

The Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 stands as a powerful moment of resistance, when a smaller and less equipped Mexican army, under General Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated the French forces, then considered one of the most formidable in the world. Under the leadership of President Benito Juárez, this victory became a symbol of sovereignty, dignity, and national pride. In our collection, Catrina Margarita honors this spirit through the presence of Margarita Maza de Juárez, representing the moral strength, resilience, and quiet leadership that sustained the nation during this defining time.

While popular imagery often associates Cinco de Mayo with Adelitas, those figures belong to a later chapter of Mexican history tied to the Revolution of 1910. iLaCatrina® returns the narrative to its rightful moment, the times of President Benito Juárez in Puebla, 1862, centering the legacy of that victory and the strength that defined a nation in defense of its independence.
