I keep coming back to this phrase:
“Becoming a better dancer.”

It’s everywhere.

And I’m not sure I believe it anymore.
Or at least, I’m not sure we ask the right question.

Because what does “better” actually mean?

More vocabulary?
More technique?
More difficult combinations?
More polished performances?

Those things can all be useful.

But eventually, a dancer has to figure out what to actually DO with everything they’ve collected.

That’s where Project Band lives.

We develop the vocabulary.
We develop the listening.
We practice improvising.
We work with live musicians.
We review what happened.

Then we do it again.
And again.
For a year.

Because improvisation doesn’t become natural because someone tells you to “just relax and feel the music.”

It becomes natural because you’ve practiced making decisions enough times that you can trust yourself to make them.

And something interesting happens along the way…

You become more comfortable with what you already know.
And, hopefully, more comfortable with who you already are.

Maybe THAT’S a better dancer.

“You need more musicality.”

I've heard that one for decades.
And I've said it myself.
Probably more times than I should admit.

But eventually I started wondering what the hell that actually means.

Because “be more musical” isn't particularly helpful if nobody teaches you how to hear more.
Or recognize what you're hearing.
Or figure out what your body can actually do with it.

And sometimes…
it's not even about doing more.
Sometimes it's about doing less.

Waiting.
Listening.
Letting something happen before you answer it.
-- That's the stuff I've become much more interested in.

And it's a big part of what we'll be working on in Project Band this year.

Email-list registration opens September 7.
Public registration opens September 9.

Anyway.

There's still one more Musicality Lab on September 5 if you want to poke around in this stuff with us before then.

“Authenticity” in belly dance.

Lord. That's a rabbit hole.

I've spent decades studying this dance.
- Old VHS tapes
- Egyptian workshops
- American workshops
- Trips to Egypt and Lebanon

Teachers saying, “Always this.”
Other teachers saying, “Never that.”

And somewhere in the middle of all of that…
THERE WAS ME.
The American ballet/jazz-trained blonde.

Would anyone have ever called my dancing “authentic”?
Maybe.
Maybe not.

But here's where my thinking has changed...

I think authenticity becomes a very different question when we're talking about improvisation. Because when you're improvising...
- YOU HAVE CHOICES
- You can stick to a script.
- You can guard your movements because you're afraid of crossing some invisible line.
Or…
- You can develop the skills to listen deeply enough that you trust your trained body to respond.

That's the one I'm voting for.

And that's a big part of what Project Band has taught me.

I wrote more about it here:

🤔 Any live music is better than no live music.

😃 But a YEAR of live music is best!

When you can step into an improvised performance to live music saying to yourself (and MEANING it!!) ‘I’m going to surrender to the music. I’m going to be bold. It’s ok if I mess up. I get a lot more opportunities just like this.’…. you become open to every possibility. You learn to trust yourself.
And what you discover from a place like that is sure to stick!

📚In Project Band, we give ourselves permission to dance to live music as a lesson.
🚌 We use the time on stage as a means. Not the end.

‼️It makes a difference.
😌 It trains you to stay calm.
♟️Calm nervous systems make better choices faster. And that’s important for an improviser!

Our next Project Band year starts in November and ends with GoLive! 2027.

Registration opens on Wednesday, September 9.
