Retiring at 62 or 63 sounds wonderful until someone asks about health insurance. Medicare does not begin until 65, so those in between years need a plan of their own.

Most folks bridge the gap with a Marketplace plan or with COBRA from their old employer. Marketplace coverage often comes with premium tax credits based on income, and leaving a job usually opens a Special Enrollment Period so you are not stuck waiting. COBRA keeps your current doctors but often costs quite a bit more.

Short term health plans look tempting. The premium is low and coverage can start fast. The catch is what they leave out.

Many short term plans can decline you for pre existing conditions, skip prescription coverage, and exclude maternity care. They also are not required to cover the essential health benefits that a major medical plan covers. That makes them a bridge for a short gap between jobs, not a long term answer for your family.

Marketplace Open Enrollment starts November 1, and a life change like losing job coverage can open a Special Enrollment Period sooner than that. Let us look at what you actually qualify for before you settle for less coverage than you need.

Medicare Advantage plans love to advertise the extras. A gym membership, an over the counter allowance, maybe a dental card. Those perks are real, and they can be great, but they should never be the reason you switch plans.

Start with the basics instead. Are your doctors in network? Is every prescription on the drug list? What is your maximum out of pocket if you have a rough year? Get those three right and the extras become a bonus rather than a trap.

Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, so now is the perfect time to look at your options with a real person instead of a mailer. I am happy to walk through it with you, no pressure at all.

Taking care of your teeth and your eyes should not feel complicated.

I have a personal enrollment link where you can browse dental and vision plans from NCD, compare what they cover, and sign up right from home. No waiting on hold, no pressure. These plans are available if you live in Texas or Arizona.

Dental and vision coverage is not included in Original Medicare, so a standalone plan is often how folks handle cleanings, fillings, glasses, and exams without a surprise bill.
