Happy 16th birthday to “Stuck Like Glue” my first #1 country song. Wrote this one in 2010 in Silverlake Los Angeles, California with Shy Carter . I’ll never forget…we were spinning our wheels for a couple of hours that day. I had the chord progression that I was just playing over and over again, but nothing was coming from it. Honestly, I was beginning to think it was just one of those days where the magic was not in the room. We took a break and walked down to a coffee shop and came back to my studio. Shy stayed outside for a smoke and I went into the studio. About five minutes later, Shy walked in and said hit play and let’s record this vocal melody idea. The first thing that came out of Shy’s mouth was the melody Hook of the chorus and I knew when he was singing it that it was a hit song. The two of us built the beat box and guitar tapping percussion loop that starts the song. It all took about 45 minutes to have verse chorus verse chorus. On a lark I texted Kristian Bush from Sugar Lad. This was a Thursday and I asked Kristian are you guys in the studio and he said yeah we’re going back in Tuesday and we’re still looking for that lead single. I said standby, I’ve got your next single. Jennifer Nettles and Kristian added their magic and the rest is history. My take away from that day is that every songwriting session you walk into can change your life. The hit song is always in the room. The question is are you going to be in the right place to receive it? Yeah I used to roll my eyes at statements like that but time and time again I’m reminded that persistence and inspiration and honestly just taking a break… That’s what can unlock that next great song. ❤️
