Mind blown by how this gorgeous pottery gets its pattern? 🤯🔥

Take a close look at these incredible vessels by the talented Gene Gandee. That dreamy, smoky surface design isn't painted on with a brush or a traditional glaze. It’s the result of a magical alternative firing process called Saggar firing.

Here is how the magic happens:

The ceramic vessel is placed inside a heat resistant container (a saggar).

Organic materials are then pressed directly against the surface of the vessel.

As the kiln heats up, the container traps the carbon dioxide and fumes produced by the burning organic matter, literally fuming the raw image of the material permanently into the surface of the clay.

Have a look at these wonderful ceramic pieces by Michele Ginouves. Look closely at those crisp lines defining these striking patterns, that beautiful terracotta color isn't painted on, it’s the raw red earthenware clay body itself peaking through!

Michele uses a meticulous tape resist technique to achieve this level of precision. After applying tape to the form, she hand draws the pattern on the tape, where she will then carefully cut it out with an X-Acto knife. With her colors carefully chosen, she brushes on those incredibly vibrant underglazes before pulling the tape away to reveal the raw clay beneath. Her work beautifully balances structured geometric harmony with functional, everyday design.

From wheel thrown tumblers to slab built platters, every piece is food and dishwasher safe! Perfect for a conversational piece, or bringing art onto your dinner table. 🍽️🌿
