Today is National Autism Awareness Day 💙
These are my kids, Harry and Maria.
They’re pretty great and have made me a better human and mom.
Maria is sweet and loving. She loves weather events, she studies birds and will spend hours and hours doing arts and crafts. She has an entrepreneurial spirit and is always working on a new business idea.
Harry is sensitive and funny. He loves his friends dearly. He’s into robotics and anything mechanical. He likes to try out different jokes on us as we’re driving home from school. He writes and sells comic books to his friends. He’s polite and kind, and a super bright kid.
They laugh, they play, they sing...they snuggle and hug and love, just like your kids do.
Occasionally, one of them will come home upset or crying because kids at school have called them “weird”. It feels unfair to be judged for how you’re made. It’s by far our biggest struggle. Acceptance.
I’ve done my best to explain to them that EVERYONE is weird. And that their uniqueness is a gift. Standing out from the crowd is cool.
But when you’re a kid, you just want to be like everyone else.
So today, we’re gonna celebrate being weird. We’re gonna blow it up with weirdness. We’re gonna blanket this whole town with our weird.
We hope you do too.
