Some objects arrive with their history painted directly onto them.

This monumental theatrical trunk is hand-lettered on both sides:

MME LUCCHESE–CARUSO
THÉÂTRE

Josephine Lucchese was the San Antonio-born coloratura soprano known throughout Europe as “The American Nightingale.” The daughter of Lucchese Boot Company founder Sam Lucchese, she married her manager, Adolfo Caruso, in 1922 and performed across the United States, Cuba and Europe throughout the 1920s and ’30s.

Its scale, repeated identification and theatrical designation strongly suggest professional touring use—built to carry the costumes and materials required by an international prima donna.

The battered wood, oxidized hardware and nearly century-old lettering remain untouched. They are not imperfections to erase. They are the surviving record of a working life spent in transit between theaters.

A remarkable piece of San Antonio, Texas—and early American operatic—history.
