A Historic House Becomes an Art Museum

The San Antonio Art League + Museum’s home at 130 King William Street has a history of its own. Built in 1896 as a carriage house, the building was later remodeled and adapted for a very different purpose: preserving and exhibiting art.

Before finding its permanent home, the Art League occupied several locations, including the Belgian Pavilion at HemisFair Plaza and the Koehler Cultural Center. In 1988, the organization purchased the King William property. The building offered greater security, climate control, and space for a permanent collection that had grown to more than 300 objects by 1990.

Today, this intimate house-turned-museum holds artwork from across generations while retaining the character of its historic King William neighborhood. It is a wonderful meeting point between San Antonio’s architectural heritage and its continuing artistic life—and admission is always free.

San Antonio Art League + Museum members are invited to submit work for our upcoming holiday exhibition, Season of Wonder.
As the year draws to a close, this exhibition invites artists to explore moments of beauty, gratitude, mystery, renewal, and awe. From the natural world and changing seasons to cherished traditions, memories, and the creative process itself, we welcome your unique interpretation of wonder.
🎨 All media welcome
🖼 Submit up to 3 works for a $25 entry fee
📏 2D work: maximum 24" x 30"
🏺 3D work: maximum 18" x 18" x 18", 25 lbs
💫 All artwork must be for sale
📅 Submission deadline: October 25, 2026
📣 Acceptance notifications: November 1
🖼 Exhibition: November 22–December 18, 2026

Then the exhibit will be open from 10 am - 3 pm on Tuesdays - Saturdays at the San Antonio Art League + Museum, until our Closing Reception on September 6 from 3–5 pm, where you can (hopefully) take home your winning altar.*

On March 13, 1912, the San Antonio Art League was officially organized—but its roots had already been growing for years. In the late 1890s, Ethel Tunstall Drought gathered groups of San Antonians who believed that art should not be reserved for the wealthy. Their vision was wonderfully ambitious: create a free public gallery, give artists a place to exhibit, acquire paintings for everyone to enjoy, and establish an art school. At the time, San Antonio was the largest city in Texas, yet it had neither an art museum nor a strong network of support for local artists. The League’s founders set out to change that. More than a century later, their ideals remain at the heart of SAAL+M. Admission is still free, artists still find opportunities to show their work, and volunteers still make it all possible. What began as a hopeful gathering in 1912 continues as a living promise to San Antonio.
