The Carver Center opened in 1929 as "The Colored Branch of the San Antonio Library and Auditorium,"-- the name still etched in stone above the venue’s side entrances -- serving as a cultural and social center in the heart of the city's African American community.
Until the 1970’s, the present day lobby and gallery served as the original site of what is now San Antonio Public Library’s Carver Library, and was segregated until 1956. The current Jo Long Theatre, which originated as the “Colored Auditorium” (also segregated), has hosted countless legendary black musicians, entertainers, and cultural icons: Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie ‘Bird’ Park, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and his Orchestra, baseball legend Jackie Robinson, The Ink Spots, Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. Contemporary artists include Aaron Neville, Savion Glover, Esperanza Spalding, Jody Watley, Robert Cray, Sheila E., and Black Violin.
While the east side has changed many times since then, and its evolution continues, The Carver -- comprised of the Jo Long Theatre, Little Carver Civic Center and an art studio --remains an active, vibrant icon of the neighborhood's history.
We look forward to engaging new audiences, neighborhood residents, and businesses with our diverse and engaging season performances and concerts, cultural and arts education classes, free Youth Matinee Series, resident artists, art exhibitions, and community outreach. Our facilities are also available for private rentals for performances, meetings and events.
As the neighborhood changes, The Carver will continue to serve as a bridge between the city's past, present, and future, with a lasting commitment to preserving and promoting black culture, history and heritage, and welcoming and recognizing the diversity and experiences of all races, colors, creeds, nationalities, cultures and ethnicities.
