Prison reform isn’t about excusing crime. It’s about asking whether our system is actually making society safer.
When people leave prison with no real treatment, no job path, no housing stability, and no support, we shouldn’t be surprised when many end up back inside.
Accountability matters. Victims matter. Public safety matters.
But if the goal is fewer victims and stronger communities, punishment alone can’t be the whole answer. Rehabilitation, mental health care, addiction treatment, education, and reentry support are not “soft on crime.” They are practical ways to reduce repeat crime.
A justice system should punish wrongdoing—but it should also create a meaningful path for people who are willing to change.
Real reform is not about letting people off. It’s about helping them come back better, so fewer people are harmed in the future.
