The orchestra's final project this semester will be a presentation of Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival." All students will be participating virtually after Thanksgiving break, so individual recordings from each musician will be woven together into a digital performance. The project will be released in December to give everyone some much-needed holiday cheer!

The final piece we will be recording is the Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin, which comes from his opera, Prince Igor. The opera was left unfinished upon the composer's death, but it was finished by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov. This piece is taken from a section of the opera in which Igor, a prince of Novgorod-Seversk, is taken captive by the Polovtsians and witnesses the Polovtsian dances. Pictured is a performance of Prince Igor by the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow.

This week, we're featuring Georges Bizet's Carmen Suite No. 1. The suite is a posthumous arrangement compiled by Ernest Guiraurd that draws from Bizet's opera, Carmen. Though Bizet, pictured above, was French, the opera is set in Spain and the music contains elements of traditional Spanish dances. Carmen Suite No. 1 contains some of the most popular selections from the opera and addresses themes of love, seduction, fate, and death.

For the next few weeks, we'll have a series of posts to highlight our repertoire for this semester and give a snippet of history about each piece. First up is the Egmont Overture by Beethoven which was commissioned in 1809 for the theater. The piece accompanied a play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe about the Count of Egmont, a Dutch noble who dies heroically resisting the Spanish occupation.

A throwback to when we could all be close together. This semester we are keeping our orchestra members safe by reducing rehearsal sizes, social distancing, and allowing players to participate remotely. Instead of a traditional concert, we will be preparing a video recording in late October that will incorporate both our in-person and remote players.
