Carolina Herrera met Andy Warhol in the late 1970s, before launching her fashion house. At a dinner in 1979, Warhol admired the Van Cleef & Arpels minaudière she was carrying and proposed a trade: the bag in exchange for her portrait.

Warhol later photographed Mrs. Herrera in a series of sixty Polaroids, selecting a frontal pose defined by her signature Gibson roll, red lips and emerald earrings. From it, he created four portraits that captured a lasting image of Carolina Herrera.

The portrait recalls the friendship between Warhol and Mrs. Herrera and the creative world they shared in New York City.
