Why is a strong seat and core so important?

Here is a video of me and Dakota at the Arcadia pro rodeo this year. During his fall, my seat remained firm, I didn't fly forward or backwards. If my seat had been weak I very easily could've flown off over his head or thrown his balance more off causing him to fall all the way down. By having a strong seat I was able to get my reins back quickly. It was scary, but having a strong seat made it easier to help him! A good seat isn't just for going around the barrels fast, it's also for being in a better position when things go south.

I never want to relive this πŸ€£πŸ™ƒ

Do you get super nervous before your barrel run?

I've talked about calming the horse, now it's time to calm the rider 🀣 Pre run anxiety is something I have battled since the start of my career. I'm not a master, but I have picked up several tricks to help alleviate the nerves. A calm rider can greatly help their horse stay calm. Chester used to back up some in the alleyway, of course we went straight to vet work, but once I calmed down and got my nerves under control he went right in. My anxiety was making my horse nervous so I knew I had to figure something out! Not to mention making mistakes I would never otherwise make during the run.

1. I was messing up a lot at pro rodeos so I knew I needed to figure something out. I decided I would run a mile before I got on my horse and it helped a lot! Even just walking for an hour or so before my run really helped my mind relax. Now, I do Tao Bo in my trailer sometimes before a big rodeo because it really tires me out!
2. Meditation. You may think it's silly but it really helps! I'll link one I like below.
3. I let my brain imagine the "bad" thoughts. Like "I'm going to hit a barrel" or "I'm going to do bad". I imagine them on a shore and that the tide is coming in and pulling them out to sea. I don't try to not think these thoughts because then I'll think them over and over. Instead, I let the thought happen and imagine a wave dragging it away.
4. If I feel my heart rate is up as I'm sitting in the holding pen, I will breathe in for 5 counts, hold for 5 counts, and breathe out for 5 counts. I'll do this until I feel like my heart rate has settled.

If I can control my nerves, I know that you can too!

What do you do to calm your anxiety before a run?
